Spirit Airlines Strike Update

Can the company lay off or otherwise fire striking pilots, in this case? I was under the impression they couldn't, legally speaking? But I'm not sure.

You know, to be very honest, I do not remember.

I know they're free to hire replacement workers, which we really can't do a thing about besides rant, rave and do our best to create a strong "disincentive" against the replacements to conduct replacement flying.

The next picketing event is in DTW on Wednesday. I'll be there. Here are the details:

Briefing at the DTW Westin at the McNamara terminal at 10:00am
Picketing at the North terminal from 11am to 1pm

Those of you who are going to be picketing tomorrow, give me or jtrain a pm or a call - we'd love to see you for a drink or dinner!

Unfortunately, I'm catching a flight right after the picket. Sorry I'll miss you this time. I'm sure I'll be back next month, though.

P.S. I'm begging you to change that avatar. I'll never get to sleep tonight after seeing that thing. :)

You know it's a crying shame that "Airline Management 101" calls for getting to the 12th hour before a contract is worked out.

You see this repeated over and over in this industry.

The pilot's or flight attendant's contact expires. YEARS go by. Management keeps paying wages at the old expired rates because they know that a new contract will always cost them more money. So they just prolong this old expired contact until the pilots or flight attendants just can't stand it anymore. They you get the dog and pony show that delays the contact even more. Then the cooling off period.

I'm being told that Spirit Airline pilots are now 9 years without a contract. The airline has no incentive to agree to a new contract.

I'm not a union guy, but it seems to me that the unions need to put a kicker into the contracts that provides for a 10% raise (or something like that) in the contract that would kick in each year that a contract is expired. If an airline operates in good faith, then this should not be a problem. If they don't then it starts to cost them real money.

Good luck guys. I believe you will get your contact just a bit past the 12th hour.

Joe

That's why there's retroactive pay. For money due. U.S gov is and anti union, we will never see any real change.

The AMFA Northwest mechanics are technically still on strike, for example.

Actually they are not. AMFA settled with NW in Oct 2006 striking mechanics had a choice of 5 weeks severence if they wanted to remain on the recall list and 10 weeks severence if you resigned also anyone who resigned if your age and yrs of service totaled '60' or higher you were given retirement flight benefits also. I was 42 with 17yrs totalling '59' so I did not get the flight bennies. I did not go on recall because I knew NW had no intention of bringing anyone back. A few guys got back but not many.

WOW! Thats all I have to say. Wait let me say it again. WOW.
Hopefully the company will settle this before the strike.

LOSE/LOOSE

This confusion can easily be avoided if you pronounce the word intended aloud. If it has a voiced Z sound, then it’s “lose.” If it has a hissy S sound, then it’s “loose.” Here are examples of correct usage: “He tends to lose his keys.” “She lets her dog run loose.” Note that when “lose” turns into “losing” it loses its “E.”

I'm just shocked that they're anticipating any.

Who in their right mind, especially in the internet era, would subject themselves to wrecking their professional reputation?

Seriously? With all the guys on the street right now. I'm sure h.r. started receiving resumes the day it was announced a strike might be imminent.

Yup, I'm serious.

The direct threat aren't necessarily replacement workers, but employees crossing the picket line.

It'd take a bare bones minimum of hmm, let's say three weeks to interview, screen, train and IOE replacement workers.

Then once cooler heads prevailed, the replacement workers would be terminated, back on the street with the professional 'scarlet letter' and unemployed again.

How could they even IOE that many people at once? The last time Spirit hired low time guys they needed like 90 hours of IOE before they got online. And are check airman considered management pilots? They weren't at MAG.

Maybe they'll charter in Canadian scabs like Amerijet did :p

People scabbed AmeriJet. That's a job on a plane with no crapper and pays (IIRC) 36k or so for a FO on a 727...

I'd be schocked if Spirt doesn't sign something before it goes to a strike. Their investors are not going to want to lose any money over a pay raise for the pilots. I'm sure the loss they'll have even after just a few days of striking will be worth more than whatever the pilots are asking for in monetary gains.
