Spirit Airlines Strike Update

You underestimate the egos of airline management. Believe it or not, business isn't always about making money for them. Sometimes it's about proving they have the bigger cajones. It's sad, really.

I'll be shocked if it doesn't go to a strike.

Really? To what end? Ok they get away with 20% coverage with a couple of scabs, then what? Sounds like Spirit is the ultimate money pinching operation, and they're going to lose a whole lot if they allow a strike.

Again, it's not always about money. In many cases, it's about ego. Look at the CMR strike. It lasted 89 days and cost Delta about $500 million. And how much money was at stake in the proposed contract? Just $50 million. They wasted ten times what the pilots were asking for, just because of ego. Don't assume that management will behave rationally.

Good luck spirit guys, its tough to put your job on the line, but give them hell, get everything that you can. Hopefully we at Pinnacle can follow your footsteps. I will walk with you guys in DTW if you go on strike!!!!!!

Spirit is a small airline, is it conceivable that they could lock out the striking workers and hire full time pilots indefinitely?

No, they haven't even tried to hire any SCABs, and they don't have an FAA-approved fast-track program for pilots already typed in the aircraft. Any SCABs would have to go through the full two months of training, and the airline would liquidate long before that.

Amerijet is an even smaller airline, that didnt work for them so I dont see it working for Spirit.

And plus Amerijet is an on demand cargo op, not exactly scheduled. It would be very hard to replace Spirit pilots if they haven't started training already. Good luck to Spirit.

You think anything bad can happen with the Riddle Furloughs down the seniority list? Hopefully they don't do anything stupid.

(Not a Riddle Bash, Just saying...)

Learn about Eastern's strike. You might be surprised......

While Amerijet is a "supplemental 121" carrier, I'll bet they're more scheduled than you think since they're an integrator like UPS or FedEx.

Even so, they still operate under the same Part 121 that you do. Thus there are the same training requirements.

It is a bash, and it remains so even with your parenthetical mea culpa.

Same thing as starting out with "I'm not a racist, but...."

All I'm trying to say is hopefully those low seniority pilots that got hired into an Airbus at 500TT w/o their CFI's and who are probably working a drive thru now don't do anything stupid. It's probably real tempting for them to go back but hopefully they think long term. It has nothing to do w/ Riddle but twist it however you want.

Don't worry about it James. Situation brings up a higher level of risk potential for such an individual to convince themselves that SCABing wouldn't be all that bad. Company still has to find Captains though.

Word on the street is that, during negotiaitons this week. the company that had been demanding $31 million in concessions is now at a cost neutral offer. Negotiations resume on the 7th and last till the 11th.

ALPA says they sent out the strike benefit vote. It's important that you support this. It sends a message.

I doubt that is good enough. It's obvious that they were "demanding" concessions only so they could later turn around and say 'We'll give you nothing, then.' and seem like they're giving up something. Everyone knew there was no way in H E double hockey sticks that they would ever get any kind of concessions.
