Spirit Airlines Strike Update

All I can say is that I am so glad that my beautiful bride:
1) encouraged me to stay and do this, reminding me of how exciting it was to be in DC March 17-19 when she got me passes to the House of Representatives to watch the health care debates;
2) encouraged me to go up to the room and nap since I have been up since 4:15 on 6/11 to fly my trip down to FLL; and
3) that she is behind me/us 100%.

Well, I believe the pilots are going to get their contract.

Oaktree Capital and Indigo Partners are not going to want to give up the revenue. That would flush their investment with absolutely no return. Equity firms do not do that with profitable businesses.

They obviously misread this and waited too long to get a new contract in place. They may have gotten concessions 18-24 months ago. But not after posting 107 million in profits.

The funky part of this whole thing is the management decision to cancel flights on Saturday and Sunday. That makes absolutely no sense and is a boneheaded move. The amount of money this airline will lose in those two days would have gone a long way to getting the pilots what they should have received in the new contract.

Trying to turn public opinion and garner political pressure for a PEB to break the strike OR at least spark some travelers revolt about the 'greedy overpaid pilots'.

Hello management. 1980 called. They want their tactics back.

Maybe they were trying to scare the pilots? Maybe they panicked when they realized they weren't going to be able to finding scabs and contract carriers to do the flying.

Scare the pilots and lose several million dollars in the process? That's one hell of an expensive dog and pony show. It's also a great way to really tick off passengers.

This whole thing is based on greed pure and simple. It's all about the Benjamins. To have an airline where pilots have not received a raise in nine (9) years and then ask for concessions is beyond bizarre. But that is how these guys think because the industry is in the state that it is in.

What has happened now is that the equity funds have put themselves in a position that devalues their equity and will not allow them to exit at the schedule (and price) they might have hoped for. Also BB's bonus is shot to hell.

Why not just strike? If it has gotten this far (through all the hoops in the RLA), why keep pushing things back? Why not say, "Strike on. We're close, so the sooner we hammer this out, the sooner our pilots return to work."

Seems like management playing with the pilot group to me.

They don't just strike because they are probably close and this is the best chance to get a deal together because of the extreme time pressure on both sides.

If they do go on strike then there is no "urgency" to get the contract resolved and this thing can drag out and that does not benefit either side.

The mediator is probably the one pushing to keep them at the table to get this contract hammered out.

My airline is approaching our contract talks with the same ideas.

Record profits in the worst economy since the Great Depression.

No pay raises for about 9 years.

They want to keep us on the road for 21 days and lower our health care coverage.

Unfortunately, we're in the same boat as the Spirit pilots. We don't want much more than industry standard compensation and not be indentured servants.

I'll be walking in FLL with the Spirit pilots this afternoon.
 
Just got back from the strike center after being up for 23 straight hours. Damn, I'm tired! Our own Seggy and Amorris are out at the airport working patrol, but the terminal is pretty much shut down, with security not letting anyone inside. The question now is whether Spirit tries to start up operations again with SCABs. We'll probably know soon enough.

Now, off to bed...
