Speaker for Network JC '09?

If it goes too formal again this year, my vacation is cancelled . . .

We are such an eclectic group. :) That is what makes JC such a great and interesting place. What I saw as fairly informal and loose in structure (but a few activities) was seen by other(s) as very formal. I agree, having a speaker does not preclude a good time being had by all, but it would define which day I would be there (since I am good for one day only).

Although we all learn from each other when we talk shop and not shop, the speaker brings formal learning to the event which can be very valuable.

My and mavsfan's logic was, even if you guys wanted to keep it loose and non formal, one speaker, especially this guy, wouldnt hurt anything. The other side of it, is, if you wanna just go party and drink etc then dont come to the lecture. Those who want to come can come and listen and those who want to drink can go and drink or do whatever they wanna do.

my .02 :D

I'll kick in a case of Miller Lite to go towards his fees, but he'll have to split it with me....

actually, it depends on what he needs to do his lecture... if he needs a projector and screen, it would cost us.... if he needs a formal room, it would cost us....

the reason we really don't want to do a speaker this year or have a more formal event is simply because we just don't have the $$ for the items that a speaker needs like a projector, podium/stage, meeting room, audio equipt and so forth.

we'd even need to find a large enough room to house enough chairs for those who are going to attend...i'm not sure we can have him speak in the bellagio hospitality suite that we rented out a few years ago as it would probably be standing room only and even that is over $1K for a day.

so there's more to having a speaker at NJC than just getting the speaker....

Ron something..... right?

We had a professor at Purdue that used to fly the U2 and SR71, among other rides. He was one of the early pilots in both programs, actually Gary Powers took his place in the U2 Squadron.

He'd speak once every couple of years. I was fortunate enough to attend one of the lectures.

Cool as hell.

If we can get this gentleman to speak at '09, it would be a special, special thing. The thing about a speaker like this gentleman is he is a true aviation fanatic. He flew the coolest airplane ever built, the plane was built with sliderules and flown with balls. It is a universal appeal to aviation buffs.

We all know how he got onto AA, he's a very special person who's done very special things. What piques my interest, beyond the SR71, is how he comes back and is instructing/mentoring fledgling pilots.

$5 of my $.02

well like I said, I cant talk with him right now, but if he would just even wanna come and talk with us in a very informal setting, no projector screen, no audio equipment, just talking to a few who wanna hear, he might be willing to do it. Once he gets home from Mexico I'll see if he's even interested.

Dont worry to all of those who are afraid of it being crazy formal, Rich is really laid back and just a good guy to talk to. Even if he doesnt come as a "formal" speaker, you'll enjoy talking with him, even if just as another JCer

Ron something..... right?

No, not Cap'n Ron. You had me thinking a bit though...I think it was Don James (?)...I remember he flew either a Swift or Culver Cadet out of Delphi...

Did you make it to that one too? Remember all the non-students in attendance?

If he's into mentoring and such maybe see if he would be interested in joining the forums here. That way even if the speaking thing doesn't work out we can still hear from him.

well, we have a possible room as well as equipment (projector/screen)... so we just need to figure out what his fee is and we might be off and running with this.

Thanks to those who have offered to help!!!! :D

i wouldn't worry about the partying...it'll be in there the entire time...that's pretty much guaranteed everytime.. HAHA

I admit that I see things the same way as Toria does on this issue. I attended my first NJC last year and felt the round table and the presentation by Capt Al Haines was extremely valuable. To me a casual party with no structure is just a big social get-together with friends. Aside from just having a good time, what do we take away from it? What do we share with others? How do we give back if nobody is around to give back to?

Don't get me wrong, parties are fun and I like them as much as the next guy, but I think we need to define what we want to accomplish at NJC 09 and then put into motion the things that will achieve them. I happen to like the idea of a guest speaker, work shops and a field trip or two. Just my .02 cents....That still leaves tons of time to drink, carouse and chase Toria, Qgar and Wildfreightess around the casino.

Velo and Calcapt! Are you two going to let these ladies call you out like that!?

I love instigating!:D
