In my opinion, it's all about networking. I know a guy (not a member of JC)who has gotten multiple checkride failures and took five years to graduate (took me five also. No money in the flight account meant no money to fly. Which in turn, meant no degree until year five). The guy went from the right seat of an RJ to the right seat of a 73. What he did have was a good personality and was well networked.

I know it gets disheartening when you hear or see others moving onto a legacy but don't stop trying. I will know next month if I will ever get back to flying and apply to a legacy or be grounded. Just like anything else in life, control the things that you can and don't worry about the rest. I think there are plenty of people on here who would help you through to the next step. Keep doing what you are doing and don't stop networking.

What have any of you alpa volunteers done for that? Are you listing it as volunteering, not mentioning it or what? I mean, volunteering is volunteering and that's all I've been able to do.

I don't find it disheartening. If anything it's motivation for me. I do have problems when slackers are the first to move on (like the CA I flew with that was three jepps behind but had moved on to stage two of interviewing at a LCC.

But for those who work for it and move on despite not being quite as experienced, I say good for them. At least they're earning their jobs vs. just waiting in line.

You said it better for sure. I was just trying to let him know that it should be used as a motivation to try harder to achieve that end goal.

I have gone back and forth regarding what to do. I think for certain companies it's probably ok and for others it might be looked against your application.

I had this very discussion with a co-worker not long ago about putting ALPA work on a resume. From what I have been told, Alaska doesn't mind it and actually likes when people have leadsership positions in ALPA. Delta is ok, too apparently.
 
A lot of people volunteer for the safety and ASAP committees. A lot certainly do it for resume. I volunteered a long time ago for a charity but it was years ago. Volunteering never came up for me, because I didn't have it on my resume. I've known others who did volunteer (ALPA and other stuff) and it was asked about, so I would think the interviewers are going tailor what they ask based on what is in front of them. Of course, this is all going to vary by airline, so if one in particular that you want to work at is big into something, seek that out.

One thing I had to keep reminding myself is that other people will have better stories. You can't top the guy who led a platoon of Army Rangers to save the town from approaching terrorists who has a Medal of Honor. No way no how.

This one time, I flew 4 legs with both the coffeemaker AND the autopilot MEL'd!
