Social Media and the job hunt.

I was about to ask the same, I see a dozen or so comments that I wouldn't ever recommend. You literally can not help yourself posting on there, only hurt .

They give out good information too, but I highly doubt any recruiter has got on there and said something like "John Smith liked our post about a new airplane and said how he has always wanted to fly for us, grab his airline app and email him for an interview!" And I feel that's why I see the same people replying to posts or liking them time after time thinking that it will help.

My completely unqualified advice if you are getting ready to interview or apply....Minimize your online/social media presence as much as humanly possible. We all probably have a photo or two out there we have forgotten to take down or a buddy posted or you made some comment in jest that might be taken the wrong way. Don't call attention to yourself.

But if they bring a cake they can "patch things up"?

Cake is so played out at this point, not to mention.. what logo would you put on it? You don't have the right to the widget...

Honestly I was talking to another pilot that was getting all spun up over that logo thing, but i mean, really, you don't think going into an interview with something like that is a little presumptuous? I'd be over the moon enthusiastic to get the interview call but... come on, taste? That seems to be the part that people are getting spun up over for some reason, but ask yourself, would you really ignore the instructions blatantly for your dream job, bind it all together and slap a widget on it?
I don't think that's "HR taking over!!!!" it's have some common sense.
People get spun up over the Airlines vs Air Lines thing too. I can't imagine Southernjets recruiting truly gets worked up about that other than the fact that if you truly want the job and have done your research, you know how it should be. If it's your "backup airline" well... My premonition would be that Southernjets isn't trying to hire you unless it's your #1. How do you figure that out, well... a well prepared candidate that comes well prepared, follows instructions, and has some SA is a good start.

So if you got an interview at say Delta or SWA or (insert other major here) do they look into your social media? Am I going to get weeded out because I post a ton of stuff on bike access? Should I put my account on friends only access?

Just as a general policy, you ought to have your Facebook locked down in my opinion. You never know who's checking it.. Why would you want to put all that personal information out publicly on the internet where it can never be erased? If you ever bend metal in an airplane the news media is going to have your profile pic of you drinking beers out on the TV screen before you can say "ALPA Legal!" and you're already judged in the court of public opinion.
I regularly go into incognito mode and try to look at my profile and make sure my settings are still what I want.

Not to mention the social engineering/hacking possibilities. Let's say you Facebook check in "Biking in mexico w/ Steve!" and your profile is totally public. Cool, if I'm a bad person I call your grandma (I get her name from your Facebook) and try to get her to western union me money... I'm going to say I was out biking with Beef Supreme and his friend Steve and Beef Supreme got hit by a car and is in the Mexican hospital and I need the western union immediately to pay for the life saving operation. And oh, now I go and rob your house too cause I know you're out of town. It doesn't happen often, but something to think about... so yeah, lock your stuff down.

All of this is true whether or not you're trying to look for new employment. Whether or not they check, I don't know the legality, but that in and of itself isn't the only reason to lock your public identity down.

"Delta is my backup." Good lord.

It's no big deal, they can always be Delta's backup applicant. :)

Of course, Delta probably needs backup pilot applicants about as much as Harvard needs backup students or the Supreme Court needs backup justices. It amazes me that anyone thinks a major airline will "have" to hire them. The competition greatly exceeds the number or available jobs.

.

Cake is definitely overdone, so you could bring it to the next level with Pie. I'd go with Peach since Delta is based in the Peach State.

Some observations. All that material you're asked to bring is scanned in a document feeder. Having to cut the binding, remove it and then scan, especially when they asked you not to is an inefficient use of time.

Additionally, every company on gods green earth today trawls social media. Especially Facebook and it's part of the evaluation process because it's freely given information that's widely available.

Both the manager of pilot selection and the manager of pilot development and a bunch of pilot selection/recruitment pilots and HR update, monitor and answer questions so when you do ridiculous stuff like "LOL light chop", "that's dumb", whatever, what do you think is going to happen? :)

And other selection teams from other airlines monitor the public feed as well, which is the hilarious part.

Of course, there's at least one technical pilot with this shirt, so
