Small airport jobs for minors?

You'll definitely need a license. Insurance and liability issues. But look for FBOs that have pumps rather than trucks.

Do you think this is for all places, seeing that JeffMSU said his FBO hired a 15 y/o to drive the fuel truck? I don't necessarily need to be a line person, I'd really just like a job any place where I can be near airplanes.

The FBO that I worked for last summer hired a 15 year old to work as a line men and then after he started they realized that he couldnt drive the fuel truck so they had to fire him.... i guess the fact that he didnt have a drivers license wasnt thought of during the interview.

That could be your only problem if you're under 16 but besides that there it not illegal to hire under 16 year old but i think theres a pretty big limit on the amount of hours you can work per week (i think its a fed law)

If you read the whole thing, he said they had to fire him because of his lack of a DL. What you can do it go buy some airplane cleaning stuff and post flyers for aircraft detailing. I've seen a few flyers around during my time at FBOs.

But that's what I'll probably do if I can't find an actual job (which will probably be the case)

Some require a driving course to operate on the field, others don't. Within a year, i was doing everything from towing, marshalling, fueling...cessnas to gulfstreams to jet rangers. It's all about who you know. I was taking lessons there at the time i applied. My interview was in a Cessna cockpit over the beach! Network network! The more time you spend at the field, the better.

It's very unlikely that you'll be working around spinning propellers or towing aircraft if you're under 18. For now I'd suggest you look for work that wouldn't be considered hazardous. Being a small flight school dispatcher is a good start.

If they say no...ask about a internship, washing planes etc.....even if its for free, one day a week during the summer. Your around the airport, and if you got a good work ethic, they will pick you up when your of age.

I know I'm getting off topic, but what exactly is a flight dispatcher? Isn't that basically just ATC? And would they allow a minor who isn't certified to do that?

Its not that its not a safe work place, but safety is placed in high regard. It CAN be a dangerous place to work, but usually safety is placed in high regard at most FBOs.

Dispatchers are different from ATC. Dispatcher for a flight school will check out the schools rental aircraft and check them back in when the renter or student arrives, receiving payment or putting the flight on account.
