Small airport jobs for minors?

I was wondering if it's legal for a 14/15 year old to get a summer job at a small airport working as a line man?

Thanks

Your best bet might be to hang around and wash planes for people. I doubt labor laws and insurance will let a minor work as a lineman.

Yeah, talk to maxmache, he worked with me for about a year and he was 15. Just get out there and talk to people. It's possible, but I have since left that job and they are hard to come by until your 18, only 2 months left for me!

Yeah, I figured they'd be hard to come by, especially now. Thanks!

I looked around on the Department of Labor and Workforce Development's website and it didn't say anything about a minor not being able to work on the ramp, but it also didn't say you could.

But about the plane washing, don't you need to be employed by the airport or have your license to get on the tarmac?

Best bet, a local flight school, where you are cleaning airplanes and stuff. Marshalling airplanes and driving tugs and such at places like Signature will not happen due to their hiring restrictions.

If the FBO wants to hire you to do it, that should be enough. You might have to get an airport ID, but they should be able to arrange that.

The FBO that I worked for last summer hired a 15 year old to work as a line men and then after he started they realized that he couldnt drive the fuel truck so they had to fire him.... i guess the fact that he didnt have a drivers license wasnt thought of during the interview.

That could be your only problem if you're under 16 but besides that there it not illegal to hire under 16 year old but i think theres a pretty big limit on the amount of hours you can work per week (i think its a fed law)

The places I worked at or applied to were pretty big on having you be at the very least 16 to work there. The main reason obviously being that you needed a driver's license to drive the fuel trucks. It certainly doesn't hurt to ask or go ahead and apply though. I applied to one place once I turned 17. They called back before I had even driven home and wanted to hire me right away but they couldn't really do it since I was under 18. A little disappointing but at the very least they had my name and knew I was interested, which is always a good thing. It might be worth it to volunteer to do some oddjobs around a flightschool (cleaning, cleaning out the planes, etc) in exchange for a few hours here and there.

Either way hang in there man, when I was your age I'd have killed to work at an airport and right after I turned 18 I interviewed and got hired pumping gas at the local airport. Met a lot of great people and learned a lot of things so the wait was well worth it.

I just turned 17 and i cannot find a job right now. Do you think that i could go to (i'm not sure if anyone is familiar with it.) Spirit of Saint Louis airport and get some kind of job there as a 17 year old?

One thing y'all may try is find a small airport community or private runway with a maintenance shop on it. Go speak with them and I'll bet you come out of it with something to do.

You mean like maintaining the airport grounds? (i.e. cutting grass)

Among other things.

One guy I work with started out as a farm hand several years ago and is about to take his A&P practical. He also isn't long away from his first pilot certificate.

Okay, thanks for the advice. Starting spring I'll have to visit some airports.

I can ask around for you.

Have you been over to Creve Couer? They don't even have a fuel truck! I think they only have one or two guys that work at the FBO, but it would be worth a shot. Lots of good folks over there.

Thanks, but I think I'd have to get a job locally (South Jersey).

I don't really have problems with fuel trucks, my family has 2 antique Mack trucks, so I can definitely drive a little tanker. As long as they let me since I don't have a license.

You'll definitely need a license. Insurance and liability issues. But look for FBOs that have pumps rather than trucks.

No i havent. from what you'r saying though it sounds like a pretty small airport. So do you think that someone my age could get a job at an airport?
