Skywest?

If they are looking for an entry level DXer, that's about the most poorly written, vaguest job description possible.

This sounds like a combo of crew scheduler and ops planning type duties. Building routes a few days ahead of schedule so they are ready and in the system on day of scheduled departure. It would be a "foot in the door" if you were wanting to work at Skywest and be there a while.

I had actually applied for another position a while back and got a call back telling me to wait until the DX position came up. He said Their policy is to be in a position for a year before transferring over.

It seemed like an odd thing and not fully DX but didn't want to miss out in case it was!

Vague description is a total understaent too...plus who can live off $10/hr...I'm sure I could if I went on a top ramen diet like college again! :bounce:

Yea that 10/hr is low for a job like that. A starting ramp agent at WN makes more than that and we just load bags haha. I'd love to apply, as if I ever left Southwest, Skywest would be the regional I'd prefer to end up at as a dispatcher one day. However, I just can't fathom taking such a pay cut and living in the middle of nowhere Utah at the same time.

A year? Ouch... Don't know how anyone could do that pay for an entire year, even with a top ramen diet. ;-)

The position is for a tail router. Your job is to get the aircraft to MX bases on second and third day items.
Thanks for clearing that up. Not the job I am waiting for sure!

I totally agree! It was hard for me to leave B6 when I did but even as an internal xfer with no experience was highly unlikely!

it's hard enough knowing I'm leaving a 70K job massaging to go make $14 for a couple years until the better pay comes along...top ramen may be too much! Haha

Ahhh, thanks for that. Wasn't really sure what that position was called or what they did based on that job description.

Well, it's not really in the middle of nowhere. 3 hours to Vegas, and I think 3 hours to SLC. Been through there a couple of times and it's an interesting town, from a geological standpoint.

You would starve to death making $10 an hour though.

Not if you have 8 wives!

Definitely an interesting town. I live in Vegas now so it's an easy drive but more like 2 1/2hrs. Close to the mountains and Zion National Park is pretty close and gorgeous. The town is tiny but outdoor activities are plentiful!

It is absolutely gorgeous out there! And so much to do outdoors. If it was possible to survive on that pay, it would be an awesome place to live.

I hear ya on the pay cut issue when your making a career change of sort. That is a killer but you have to follow your passion and the money will follow or so they say :) I plan to find out soon as well!! Thanks for sharing.

It is possible or probably to find dispatching positions with smaller charter type companies? I see open positions around for non regionals and a local charter company near me has had some postings in the past.

Yes it's possible but keep in mind that those gigs are Part 135. Not sure how Part 121 operations look at that experience. If your goal is to be in the 121 arena, I'd stick with finding a 121 job to build valuable experience and work your way up the ranks. But that opinion is based on advice I've seen given here on the forum previously. I haven't worked 135 so I don't know this from experience.

SkyWest starting pay is $15.68/hr - 2nd yr is $17.53/hr - 3rd yr $18.75/hr and so on with a 15yr top out around $26/hr. This is just for dispatch assuming you never do anything more. There are several positions that offer decent overrides (Trainer, ATS, System Controllers, Lead Dispatch, OCC Ops Supervisor, etc...). It is only about 90 minutes to drive to Vegas, not sure where the 3 hour thing came from. 4 hours drive up to SLC. St George itself is a town of about 150,000 people so its a decent size for a "smaller" community. People that come here will either love it or hate it based on their own personal lifestyle. Great for anyone that loves the outdoors, several National Parks nearby plus tons of places for hiking, biking, ATV's, boating, hunting, fishing, etc... There is nearly zero night life which a lot of people say would be the biggest complaint. And yes it is a Mormon (LDS) community, so on Sunday's many business' and local non chain restaurants are closed. The town is right on the UT/AZ/NV border, the climate is 9 months of nice wx with about 3 months of extreme heat. - Summer temps get to 115-120 degrees somedays and Winter lows on a very rare extreme cold day may get down to the 20's but as an average the winter temps are in the 50's during the day. Spring and Fall are amazing with average temps 60-80. Almost never need a coat here. It all depends on what kind of life you want, if you love the big city then you'll probably not like it here. Overall my opinion is that there are a lot more pros about working and living here then there are cons. My single biggest complaint would be that from SGU you can only fly to SLC or DEN right now..... hoping to add PHX sometime soon or maybe a California flight. We had LAX but it was the absolute worst possible departure time for anyone that was trying to connect so they discontinued it last year. You basically have to take an early flight up to SLC or drive to LAS when traveling. The only jobs that I would accept over being here would be with either Delta or Southwest, maybe Alaska. However I'd still rather live here than where any of those jobs would take me.

I have interviewed for a couple 135 private charter jobs and have actually turned them down. One was the pay under 24k and the other was great pay starting at 55k but the practical experience wasn't really there. Flight planning, fuel loads, alternates and weight and balance were done by PIC and not DX.

I'm trying to go the 121 route though and I'm sure like most people would love to work for FedEx/UPS/Delta/SW ect

If you are looking for a actual dispatch position at SkyWest I would keep an eye out for a job positing within the next 1-2 months.

Looks like they just put up the job posting last night.

Do you happen to know how many times a year SkyWest puts up dx job posting? During what times of the year? Probably won't be applying yet but I would like to in the near future.

Skywest like all regionals will have a posting every 3-4 months on average. Just gotta keep checking.
