Skywest Questions

True words. This is my philosophy in aviation and so far it has worked pretty well. Based at home would be great. Commuting to reserve in ORD was expected. Ended up commuting to reserve in BOI and now SAN which are pretty good places if for me if must commute to reserve.

And April bids were just posted. This philosophy holds true yet again. No weekends off, but at least 3 days off in a row between all work blocks making the commute tolerable.

When I commuted reserve this was all I would look for and bid for. It wasn't so bad but commuting back and forth for 2 days off, nope nope nope. Then again my commute was SLC-ORD so that has nope nope nope written all over it. Better than SFO-ORD which I did before I moved as well. Although, SFO had high frequency flights and even had some heavies on that route sometimes.

A lot of OKC flying I do is 7/900. We're those numbers just for -200?

Speaking of which I'm going to OKC tomorrow and 4 times next month. Can't complain, I like the area.

I know they are also starting to use 175’s in OKC on the DEN route. Never thought I could possibly have the opportunity for a home base airline job living in OKC.

I knew keeping that house in OKC back in ‘98 would pay off! 8)

How different is the quality of life on the CRJ vs. the ERJ out of ORD? From what I'm gathering, CRJ pilots are getting worked to death but ERJ pilots have decent time off but a much longer upgrade to captain if they stay in type.

You pretty much have it right. If you don’t want to fly choose the ERJ, if you want to fly a lot choose the CRJ

With the addition of the Delta ERJs in Chicago I think the ERJ guys are going to start working at more of a Skywest level. Granted the 175 trips are better and more efficient than the CRJ

It's kinda like two separate airlines. That may change after all the deliveries this year.

I remember when we used to bid on schedule on paper and the top half of the base got 4 days off a week and worked only 3 days. The bottom half worked 4 day trips. And reserve guys were barely used. Most of the senior guys bid reserve because they never flew. Things changed A LOT when they implemented PBS. I worked a lot of CN trips.

I had one day off this week, things are great

Hey all, I have a class date for the 175 and was wondering if anybody could chime in how much flying I should expect to get out of training while on reserve. I know it’s not a lot but am wondering if it has started to improve with the recent and upcoming deliveries. I also hear that I should expect to be on reserve for more than 6 months, is this accurate?

If you go to LGA you'll likely get off reserve right away and fly your tail off.

How long would it take for a new hire to hold SLC on the ERJ? The website says a 12/7/17 hire got it, but I assume that could change with the shrinking base. I live in SLC and I'm hoping to be in class somewhere in July.

SLC is shrinking on the CRJ, not ERJ. It's expanding on the ERJ. May 2017 to May 2018 has us (CRJ) at 24% loss of hours. It's pretty tough to give you an accurate time on when you'll get the base though. It's only been open 2 months.

If the company would actually award based on seniority like they're supposed to, it'd still be relatively senior. But last month they dumped in 14 ERJ FO'S (without TDT so it's permanent) and skipped over all CRJ FO bids because of "operational need". So it went junior. When it shouldn't have.

Thanks for the reply! I am a bit scared of commuting to LGA reserve while waiting to hold SLC, so I'll keep weighing my options.

Yeah I understand. I will say if you want to live in base (which is SLC) then I'd probably go ERJ. The doors have been shut on SLC for a while now on CRJ. The recruiting numbers might be skewed because the Aspen DMA flying helped get a few junior FO'S in. I was just looking at my PBS bid this month and we've already shrunk the base around 40 in the last 6 months. It appears it's going to continue for a bit, so who knows when the doors open and it probably won't be for many people if they do. The list is already becoming log jammed.

The commute to LGA will be tough but a commute DTW/ATL from SLC might be just as bad. I did SLC-ORD for a little while and it was really good. AA/DL/UA do it, lots of frequency, and one of the carriers was usually open. Not sure if new hires can get that out of training with LGA opening though.
