Skywest Questions

There were a few rotor pilots in my CTP class. One had heard rumors about them looking at a future transition program for rotor pilots but it sounded like it was just in the early stages of being talked about.

You could try to strategically choose an aircraft (CRJ) and base that would give you the most hours per year.

I was told that SkyWest (in addition to the standard 121 requirements) requires 2,500 fixed-wing hours (not total time) in order to upgrade to captain. Is this still the company's current policy? As a military rotary-wing guy, this would add over an additional year of time to upgrade. Supposedly I could request a waiver, however, I would rather go somewhere where it is fact, not merely a possibility.

If they still do require 2,500 fixed-wing hours, who in the company would responsible for reviewing the policy in order to potentially change it?

According to the current Pilot Policy Manual (Rev 7, 1 Nov 2016, SP3015.5: Qualification Training):
A.2(a) The minimum requirements for a first officer to be considered for upgrade training are:
  1. Possess an original copy of a successful ATP written exam or ATP Certificate
  2. Current first class medical
  3. 2500 hours total fixed wing time
  4. 1000 hours total multi-engine time or equivalent
  5. 1000 hours total turbine time
  6. 1000 hours of Company flight time or equivalent
  7. Must not have any pending action on certificates from the FAA
  8. Must not be frozen in current position
B) The Company may waive any of the requirements listed above in 5.A.1) or 2) when there are no other qualified pilots available to fill the needs of the Company.

As to who could grant a waiver, which items get waived under what circumstances, or who could/would change the policy I really don't know.

I bet you'd easily get a waiver in the current environment.

Speaking of upgrade, anyone else uncomfortable with the idea that CRJ upgrade is getting cut to a 5-day ground school with more emphasis on CBTs?

I honestly have no idea what you’re talking about. “Getting cut”? Pretty sure when I went through it was 4-5 days, systems test, matrix, no flap landing on day 5 or 6 and a leadership course on the 7 day. Done. Off to sims. So it’s already 4 or 5 days of ground. And a lots of CBTs to do beforehand.

That is correct. The requirement to upgrade to Captain is 2500 Fixed-wing hours. Unfortunately, I can't shed any light on the possibility of that requirement changing to Total Time. If there are any other questions you have, let me know.

I thought upgrade was always 1 week ground... Unless you change equipment?

Ground school traditionally until now was 8 days, removing the 3 days covering things like systems to put more emphasis on captain do's and dont's. I've attached an older copy of the ground school footprint to compare to the email I got a few weeks ago:
Hello upgraders,
you are going to be the first with an updated upgrade footprint. On your EFB, I would expect by the end of the day tomorrow, that you will have three new tiles on the CRJ Training Resources Tab under the Company Manuals app. One is a welcome letter from me that explains what to prepare. The other is homework that we recommend completing with your Courseware. The last is a Study Guide that should help you prior to class as well as during class. The ground footprint is the only change to expect. The ground training is 5 days instead of 8. The reduction is due to systems being done via CBT instead of in class lecture. There is no difference to the FTD or SIM schedules. If you have questions please reach out via email or call me.

SkyWesters,

I have a like new 42R leather jacket with three striped shoulder boards, barely used as I wasn't there for very long...lol

Seriously though, if you're interested PM me and we can discuss a price. It will be a very discounted price, I live in Portland so we can also discuss shipping or meeting up for the transfer.

At my place, we do a 1 day systems from CRJ-9-CRJ-9 plus 2 days of captain leadership. If you are going CRJ-9-CRJ-2 or vise versa you do 3 days of systems and 2 for captain leadership. If you are an FO you shouldn’t need a full week of systems to upgrade.

Yeah, this ^

Devoting more time to leadership and "Captain stuff" is the right move. Went through CRJ upgrade at SKW back in Jan. 7 days or however many days spent on systems was and is overkill to the max.

If your a current and qualified CRJ FO, and still need a full week of systems class, you shouldn't be upgrading in the first place. 90% of what was covered could have been done in CBTs.

In case anyone is interested, it is now possible to hold captain right out of training in DTW and ATL. So long as you have the time anyways. Meanwhile, anywhere west of Minneapolis..

They also sent out that massive email using Christmas off as the incentive to upgrade now to ATL! :D

Good for you guys! Is all you need 2,500 fw and 1,000 121 hours?
Yep, pretty certain that's it. Not a bad deal for someone that is able to uproot. I'm still attempting to convince the significant other to move with Minneapolis since it looks as is it will be years before I can upgrade where we live at the moment.
