Skywest Questions

Does anyone know what is up with ORD? Is it normal to have this many FO's here? Is this something that has happened before?

I'm not complaining about getting paid to hang out with the family. Its great. I'm just wondering why.

ORD ER7 is where the bodies get dumped.

Like all other times that the staffing has been whack, it's probably pretty temporary.

How do you determine the -11 number?

I don't mind. Again I'm not complaining. This beats being on call for charter by a huge margin.

I'm interviewing this next week and hearing about the reserve time on the 175 is making me think when they ask me if I want the ERJ, CRJ or no preference I should say the CRJ. Would everyone on here pretty much agree that the CRJ is where the QOL is for the indefinite future?

I do live in the Western half of the country and specifically in a fairly senior CRJ base.

I misread the pool for your category (today is the 24th, a date that I should never forget). So, no, it's not to -11.

This all changes at the drop of the hat.

I'd not state an equipment preference if it were me, but you are not me.

When I started they were stacking CRJ FOs in MSP, on Thanksgiving there were 79 FOs on reserve that year. Obviously the ERJ is all about Chicago right now. Why won't they spread out reserves you ask? Because this is the way It's always been done, and they can just spend money to OBR people around. Also god forbid people be able to drop or exchange anything, that's a serious no no.

Plus it's not like people are sitting reserve in ORD for very long either. I already got a (composite) line for next month and I've only been done with IOE since mid-April. Things are moving quickly.

On another topic, regarding the email from RJ, are the current pay rates staying the same? Did I read it right?

No, something is going to change. As to how much it's going to change, your guess is as good as mine. Some minor details would have been nice, but hey at least we know RJ is still around.

As far as QOL is concerned what are your goals? Hold a line and fly as much as possible ASAP? Or be based close to home ASAP? Because those two things are not always mutually exclusive. From what I hear the CRJ flying on the west coast is slowly being shifted to the ERJ. So if you take the CRJ you may be stuck in Detroit for a lot longer then you expected, but you would potentially be holding a line. If you take the ERJ you may be stuck in ORD for a while but have a chance at a west coast bid and may be stuck on reserve for a while.

Obviously things are very fluid right now and everything could change by the time you finish ground school. But thinking long term tends to work better when you have a 2 year seat lock. If you set expectations low for holding a line and getting based close to home now you are in for a much more enjoyable career.

Thanks! Yea I can't imagine anything big since they're still having no problem filling classes, but like you said, good to know SAPA is still there and actively working for it.

Really just considering going to DTW on the CRJ side now. Reserves are getting larger in ORD and not very many of us getting called. Just don't want to give up 10 commuting flights for 4. Can't decide.

Thanks for the reply. QOL for me means being based close to home (PHX), even if that means sitting reserve a little while longer than the CRJ. I know I definitely don't want to be in DTW, so would that mean go with the ERJ and hope for a west coast base at some point?

Again, I don't really care which aircraft I'm flying as long as I can be somewhat close to home. The recruiters at a recent event said "CRJ for QOL", but if it takes commuting across 3 time zones for a good while to get there I'm not sure I want to do that.

Again, thanks for the input. Just trying to get a good idea of what to say in the interview when asked.

Be honest in the interview, tell them where you live and what you want. Just understand the recruiters might tell you what you want to hear. PHX is tough, not a lot of movement in or out from what I hear and its CRJ only (for now, not sure if thats rumored to change or not). Someone with more current info could help you decide better but if you take the ERJ you may have to commute to say LAX for a while. If you take the CRJ you may get to PHX after a year or so. Thats a tough call. But either way Skywest is a good company. Good luck!

If you don't want to die on reserve on the left coast at OO go Ejet. All the 175 guys I talk to are pleased with the QOL. If you go CRJ plan on spending 6-9 months in DTW or ORD, but eventuall you will get back home.

Is there a wait time for out of base guys to pick up trips once they're posted? Or can I pick it up now? Thought there was a period of time that trips were available only to those in base for a few days.

Don't think so. If there is it's not programmed into the software as I was picking up out of base almost as soon as it was posted.

I was going to make a joke about sitting reserve in ORD, but thought, "Man, nah… Just nah…."
