Skywest pilot attempts to steal company plane

o_O Damn, what a story. Sounds like he had a few mental issues that got the best of him. With all these newsfeeds about pilots going off the deep end I can't help but feel disappointed. I wonder though what he would have done with the CRJ, had he taken off? Good thing that no bystanders were hurt.

Maybe take a final landing like the ERAU CFI did in the '90s at DAB.

Maybe even into the SKW HQ. Who knows? Good number of possibilities.

They'll probably be some time consuming procedure to make it more difficult for a single person to successfully get a airliner out now, like taxiing/tugging into a position where you need a tug to push you back from, etc.

I always figure if you're going to do that, leave your paramour/spouse/girlfriend/boyfriend unharmed to live their lives and just "disappear" during a dive trip to Bermuda.

But to take someone else with you like that and to make a spectacle of it is pure narcissism.

He's not as important as he thought he was.

It's very possible this wasn't something pre-planned. Possible that he killed his gf accidentally or negligently, but didn't want to face the music for it?

That would track. I don't know when he purchased the pistol he used to off himself, but it seems to me most people wouldn't plan to murder someone with a knife if they had a gun available.

Yes, kind of where I was thinking. Pure suicide, it's not the usual M.O. to kill someone else first. That leaves murder-suicide as a possibility for anything pre-meditated; or negligence/accident/crime of passion for anything not pre-meditated.

Yeah, I haven't read any facts of the murder of the girlfriend. Other than 'stabbing', we don't know what exactly went on there. If it started out as a shoving match (following a "Baby, I just want to TALK to you!!") and then turned deadly or he went there with intent to kill. Considering both are dead now, it may be very hard to determine that.

A man being sought on suspicion of homicide, had dated the victim for four years and was arrested in March for allegedly harassing her, court records show.

Police confirmed Monday that Christina Cornejo, 39, was found dead inside an apartment on the 1,000 block of Cheyenne Villas Point Friday. Her death was ruled a homicide, the 13th this year in Colorado Springs, compared to 12 at the same point last year.

Police continue to search for Brian Joseph Hedglin, 40, in connection with her death.

According to court records, Hedglin was free on a $10,000 bond from a harassment case at the time of her death. He had been arrested in March when Cornejo told police that he had stormed into her apartment, took some of the belongings he gave her and smashed her computer and printer.

According to court documents, she had been dating him for four years when she told him on March 11 that she wanted a break. She drove home and he soon followed her, letting himself in with his key. He told her that he wanted her to pay him back for money spent on an upcoming planned ski vacation. She said she would pay him the next day. Instead, she said, he opted to take back items he had given her. She again agreed so he would leave, according to court records.

He then decided to take her computer as well. Cornejo told police that he grabbed it and became upset, yanking it from the wall and throwing it on the ground. He did the same to her monitor and also threw her printer at her treadmill, breaking both. She called a friend who called police because he heard screaming in the background. She told police that she felt intimidated by him but that he did not hit or hurt her.

Police arrested Hedglin on suspicion of criminal mischief, theft and harassment. He is scheduled to go on trial in August for the charges.

On Friday, police were called to the apartment on Cheyenne Villas Point at the request of a relative, who feared for her safety. Police found her dead inside. Soon after, police announced they were searching for Hedglin.

On Saturday, a four-hour search was organized by Colorado Springs police, El Paso County sheriff’s deputies and Army police to homes near Fort Carson. Capt. Tony Hoefler , a spokesman for the base, said that Fort Carson police were involved in the search because the death was so close to the base. Hedglin is not a soldier, he said.

The hunt for a Colorado Springs murder suspect prompted a four-hour search Saturday that drew Colorado Springs police, El Paso County sheriff’s deputies and Army police to homes near Fort Carson.

Brian Joseph Hedglin, 40, is wanted in the apparent slaying of a woman whose body was found Friday in the 1000 block of Cheyenne Villas Point, according to police spokesman Larry Herbert.

Hedglin, who faces an August trial in El Paso County on charges of criminal mischief, theft and harassment, is to be considered armed and dangerous, police said.

He is free on a $10,000 bond in the pending case, court records show.

The woman’s death was called “suspicious.” She hasn’t been identified, and few details have been released, including cause of death.

During the search of Red Rock Valley Estates, a small subdivision near Colorado 115 and Calle Del Fuente near Fort Carson, deputies knocked on doors and stopped motorists to ask if they had seen Hedglin on a black motorcycle, though they were mum on why he was believed to be in the area. Army police assisted, Fort Carson spokesman Sgt. 1st Class Brent Williams confirmed. Authorities also were in the neighborhood on Friday afternoon.

El Paso County Assessor’s Office records show that Hedglin purchased a home at 1074 Cheyenne Villas Point in Colorado Springs last November.

Details of his pending case were unavailable. His attorney, Steven Rodemer, declined to comment.

If the woman’s death is ruled a homicide, it will mark the 13th of the year in Colorado Springs.

Police found the woman’s body Friday, after a relative requested a welfare check, police said. Unable tp contact anyone inside, officers forced entry after “it became apparent that a crime had occurred,” Miller said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Colorado Springs police at 444-7000.

I have been wondering the same thing. We may have just dodged a bullet in that this guy did not get the plane off the ground. Scary to think of the potential damage that this suicidal fugitive maniac flying a 44 000lbs plus machine could have done to property and persons. Not to mention the media fallout.... Scary stuff.

I'm curious what his BAC was. I don't think I've read anything regarding toxicology on the guy. If he was wasted (and I have absolutely no evidence what-so-ever to substantiate that he was) then he may have been too blitzed to operate the plane. A possibility to consider.

He rode a motorcycle to the airport, then scaled a razor-wire-topped fence using gloves and a rug.

If he was too hammered to "operate the plane" (taxi it without hitting the terminal and taking the wing off), I highly doubt he could have successfully accomplished the previous two things.

True. Like I said, total speculation about anything toxicology-related. Am curious as to the details though.

I got up with the normal feeling of early morning paranoia. Brush my teeth, turn the news on for 30 seconds to be sure there's no smoking hole and I guess the national news hadn't discovered the story yet.

It's been a bad habit since 9/11.
