Skywest pilot antics in IAH

To actually feel that punishment and physical harm should come to a guy trying to help everybody out is just disgusting, and goes against everything I believe in.

Who said anything about physical harm? I don't think anyone wished that on the guy, certainly not me. But yes, I certainly would like to see him get disciplined. He was essentially stealing someone else's job. I have no sympathy for that.

I'm just glad ATN is leaving the profession. Good riddance.

Yeah, you're really the guy who takes the high road. :sarcasm:

I was referring to ATNs statements, not yours. His animosity to anyone who does not agree with his point of view is embarrassing.

I don't think you really comprehend what the problem is here. It has nothing to do with disagreeing with my point of view. It's much more serious than that. HE WAS VIOLATING THE RAMPER'S CONTRACT! This is absolutely no different than if a pilot went to management and offered to fly for free, in violation of the labor contract with the pilots union. No difference whatsoever. It is a violation of the rampers CBA, plain and simple. It should not be tolerated by any trade unionist.

With the talk about the wheelchairs. I see SWA pilots all the time helping out with wheelchairs during the boarding process. They are union as are the rampers. Perhaps they get initial and recurrent in wheelchair ops?

Wheel chair pushing is not covered under the CBAs of the rampers, customer service agents, or gate agents. It's typically handled by an outsourced provider at each airport. Prospect is a large company that handles it for many large airports, for example.

But, SWA is actually a perfect example of where union scope clauses are taken very seriously, and it took me by surprise when I first witnessed it. At many SWA stations, the person who works the customer service desk at the gate is in a different job classification than the person who handles the jet bridge and takes tickets. They absolutely refuse to intrude on each other's turf. While I don't think much of SWAPA, the other unions on the property at SWA do seem to have a very good handle on traditional trade unionism.

I think that would be fine. Have an assistant chief pilot call him in to explain to him that he can't do the job of a unionized ramper. I'm not advocating that the guy get fired or suspended. He just needs a wake up call.
I'm just saying its likely he didn't know he was stepping on toes. Now the ramp riding was plain youthful dumbassness.

Maybe, maybe not. As you can see in this thread, there are plenty of people who have no problem stepping on toes and stealing other people's work. So maybe he knew and didn't care, or maybe he didn't know and needs to be educated. Either way, he needs a talking to by an authority figure.

No, I don't. I never have understood this type of thinking and I doubt I ever will.

I don't give a rat's ass about anyone's contract. I just want to get the job done so we can all go home.

It should not be tolerated by any trade unionist.

It's a good thing I'm not a "trade unionist".

As a "union" ramper, that's hilarious. Our union could not give less of a crap about us other than getting their cut of our paychecks.

I have no idea who your union is. Maybe it's weak, maybe it's not. Maybe you're right, or maybe you're just bitter and uninformed like so many ALPA members. But I do know this: if a Pinnacle pilot tossed bags in a place like PHL where NWA rampers worked our flights, their union most certainly "gave a crap." I know because I handled the representation. Our base manager was less than pleased that he got a call from NWA Human Resources because of the grievance that was filed by the ramper. NWA didn't like paying out settlements because one of our yahoos thought it would be great to "go above and beyond."

Speaking of wheelchairs, apparently ordering on in some countries can cost the airline up to $80 (FRA). So if you're pushing one in Europe, they love it as they're still getting paid! BOOM!

CWA. Pretty much everyone at the company agrees that they sold us up the river. Not to mention I make less money now than I would have if they hadn't been voted in because they agreed to that joke of a contract we have. Glad they're looking out for me!

But next time I'll be sure to point and scream "EYY TOOK ARR JAAAHBS!"

So let's say you get to your airplane in the morning and you find that one of the rampers has already powered up the aircraft and started the APU for you ... you know, because we all have to help each other out at the airport. He tells you he plays a lot of flight sim so he knows the basics of starting up your aircraft. Are you going to give him a big old pat on the back for being a team player?

Are you guys seriously still arguing about this? You all sound like whiny little kids on a playground because Joey didn't give the swing to Billy. Grow up.

Look, it's simple. The guy who took video is an immature brat. Just because someone else wants to help out is no reason to deride them. "Ooo, you're helping the company, aren't you buddy?" Are you kidding me? The Skywest guy is an idiot, because anyone who rides a belt loader is an idiot, ramper or not. It especially looks bad as a crewmember, because you're supposed to be a professional who is "above" that sort of stuff. Take the long way around and save yourself the dignity.

You are making a huge deal about something that is a non event (well, bypassing security isn't, but that's not what you guys are bellyaching about). Would you do it? Maybe not, but who gives a rats ass? This guy thought throwing bags was worth it, and that's his deal, not yours.

Seriously, the world needs more libertarians.

Heck yeah I would bonus points if it's summer (and nice and cool inside) and extra extra bonus points if it is winter and nice and toasty inside.

At one of our stations rampers are trained to power up the aircraft so they can get it ready and in position for us.

To your airline, you are a number. Nothing less, nothing more. You will never be worth more than your number. You will never be rewarded for doing more than your number. You are a cost liability. Every thing you do has a number. If they can make that number smaller, they will.

The smaller your number, the larger their number is. If you are happy, your number is too big. If your number is too big, then their number is not big enough. If their number is not big enough, it is their everlasting goal to fix that. They will not stop until a strike, or the new numbers to replace old numbers become too much. They know that the likely hood of either happening is small,

So, as you sit there, tossing bags, remember, they've got your number, and they are coming for it.

Umm, it's the internet?

If we all sat around staring at one another, there'd be no point of running a forum.

It's about like turning on the television, shaking a cane and saying "All these dagummed channels, too many dagblasted channels!"

People talk on the internet. And there's also porn so when one bores you, there's always the other.
