SkyWest Inc. orders 100 MRJs

If the wiki info is accurate how is this thing suppose to go into production with only 170 orders and no working prototypes? The ETA delivery for the 50 for TSA says 2014? :bounce: The only physical product they have is a fiberglass cabin mock up.

Heres some clips from this article http://www.businessweek.com/news/2012-07-12/skywest-sees-mitsubishi-order-kicking-off-fleet-renewal:

"SkyWest, the world’s largest operator of Bombardier Inc (BBD/B).- built regional jets, is looking to replace most of its fleet of 718 planes over the next 10 to 12 years as their leases end and the aircraft are returned to lessors...Our order with Mitsubishi is really just a first tranche within an overall fleet replacement strategy,” Kraupp said late yesterday in a telephone interview. “We’ve had ongoing dialogue and discussion with Bombardier on new aircraft orders and that won’t change. We will just wait and see if Bombardier is able to bring an attractive deal to the table...
Bombardier, Embraer and Mitsubishi are all in the running for future regional jet orders, Kraupp said. The company will also consider buying turboprops, he said.
"We like the Q400," he said, in reference to Bombardier’s newest turboprop model.
SkyWest’s next aircraft purchase “could happen easily within the next 12 months, if not less than that,” Kraupp said. “We are not going to order 100 percent of our fleet from one particular manufacturer. We’ve been very open with the manufacturers about that.”

SKW Inc. plans on placing more fleet replacement orders within 12 monthes. I wonder if the MRJ will be a supplement, or potentially the primary aircraft replacement. Knowing that SkyWest has such close partnership with Bombardier, I bet they are playing hardball with them to get a deal financed to their liking.

With the first MRJs not arriving til 2017, there is little doubt Skywest will be placing another order. Likely Bombardier but I wouldn't completely rule out Embraer. I'm speculating that an order will be placed shortly after Aug 8th, if the AMR TA passes

I understand trying to get better financing terms but I don't really get the split manufacturer concept of ordering airplanes. If a manufacturer makes the most efficient/or best aircraft in the buyers mind for 70 seats lets say. Then why would you buy planes from two different makers? That only increases training and maintenance costs. Example is united ordering both 787 and Airbus A350s half and half. Basically the same class airplane. I don't know...maybe they are talking about MRJ for 70 seats and CRJ for 90??

It's a bargaining ploy, they'll probably end up with a single type

Its a 90 seat single class configuration. Just like airbus A380 is a 853 passenger single class plane, yet nobody takes that. SkyWest would have to remain within scope of 76, and I remember reading in one of these announcements that the intention is just to be a replacement for the current scope of airplanes.

It must also fit under the 86,000 lb weight limit also.

If people are excited about an order, for a regional, five years down the road... Professional Aviation: You're doing it wrong.

Understandable to be much to do about nothing if your at a major or expecting to get on there in < 5 years.
Its only news to you if #1) you think you'll still be around to actually fly the thing. #2) if your associated with the company not as a pilot. Many people on here fall into this category.
