Skywest Hiring?

The bill is already in the mail, hoss.

Tell you what. This advice will be an equal charge to your invoiced charge (I'm giving you a discount on account of you being in student status).

Do you know what a whipsaw is?

I thought it was when one overall company will play it's own assets against each other...which is why I thought if the two certificates were kept on opposite coasts it wasn't in competition with itself. Maybe I'm way off?

You're correct from that angle.

However, there are still 3 pilot groups and what you will see is shifting of flying from one entity to the other.

Do some research on Texas Air. You'll see what the guys are talking about.

To be devils advocate here:

Let's put yourself in my shoes and tell me if it sounds fair. When I was first hired at Skywest I had calls from expressjet and another small cargo outfit. I respectfully declined both.

I believed in my company and we have prospered. I now sit at roughly 35% seniority in the company. How is it fair for an expressjet pilot or ASA pilot that chose to go to another airline to be put in front of me?

Be it a 20 year capt there or not, you chose to go there. Not come here. So you shouldn't be allowed to get ahead of one Skywest pilot.

You want to have a single list? Fine. I see the benefits. But if you chose to gamble by going elsewhere and lost you shouldn't expect to come into our house with a large hand out making demands to be put ahead of our pilots.

Another thing that I had observed is that all the people on this forum who agree that merging the lists is fair are not actually Skywest pilots. And Train and Chicaga, you know you guys are my boys so I'm not callin you out but I just don't think its fair for another pilot to be put in front of me when I've been contributing to Skywests success for the last 7 years.

You would be right if ASA and XJT didn't bring anything to the company.

And at worst you should be roughly 35% of any combined list.

interestingly enough, today I heard of the possibility of voluntary furloughs in September.... from someone who I know personally and trust.

We both thought the idea was ludicrous, but he heard it from someone who would know...

Large handout...I'd recommend talking to ExpressJet pilots about whether or not they think it's a handout.

I truly hope SkyWest never loses a feeder contract with a mainline operator. You guys want to be kept separate because you believe that management will take better care of you than a union; but, let me ask you: What do you think your management is going to do when the music stops? Will management still stand behind you?

I've worked for a non-union shop and have watched what happens to a "benevolent" management team when suddenly the balance sheet doesn't look so hot. They'll turn on you faster than you can blink.

When that happens, would you rather have the full-force of 7000+ unionized pilots behind you with a legally-binding contract, or would you rather beg for scraps from the master's table?

Please go research who I am with regards to unions before you make assumptions.

Yeah, last month my FO told me during a trip that his chief told him he would be approved for VLA for FALL. And yet, if you look at the reserve staffing, it says we have 2 reserves in ORD when we need a minimum of 15 everyday. So how exactly can that be true? Someone ain't telling the truth.

And at worst you should be roughly 35% of any combined list.

At worst? Bud, I think you and I have very different views about this topic. Again, if you chose to go to another carrier, you shouldn't be allowed to be in front of one Skywest pilot. Simple as that. All of our FO's have been on reserve for 3 years for SkyWest Airlines. It's time for FO's who have been on reserve for SkyWest Airlines to be awarded their captain upgrades that they have earned by flying revenue flights for SkyWest Airlines.

Get my drift? If you contributed to Expressjet Airlines back in the day when they were doing branded flying and they had made it, you wouldn't be singing the same tune. Lets say we had failed and you were buying us, would it be fair for me to expect to be in the same seniority for an ExpressJet Captain? I think not. I wouldn't be bold enough to say"I bring this to the table". Those are some bold words for an airline that was just purchased for $133 Million when the acquiring carrier has close to $1 Billion CASH RESERVES in the bank. Lets not fool ourselves into who brings what to the table.

Captain Graham has been on reserve on the EMB for a few years now. He's patiently waiting a transition to the Jet with his airline. Capt Dutson has been on the EMB in SLC for quite a while now flying revenue for Skywest and I'm sure would like to be going to the jet. How about Capt Lasure? He's been commuting to reserve for SkyWest for years now. He is ready to bare the fruits of his labor by holding a decent line. I don't think keeping them where their at would be fair if an integration were to occur. They have put in the labor for this airline, and they should be rewarded for this airline. When you put in the labor for our airline, then you will be rewarded.

After reading your last post, the burden of proof is on you to explain where you stand with unions. A full integration is best for everyone. Certain SkyWest pilots may feel that they made the correct decision in carriers and are ready to pull up the ladder, but trust me: This profession is going nowhere without unity.

So you think going from 35% in the company to about 13% in a combined list is fair?

Fence off all the Skywest flying if it makes you feel better.

PS- I dont' work for XJT.

Wait. So being bought by another company means you didn't "make it," and now everyone at the company that bought you gets to step over your carcass? If that's the case, then every merger would be like AA/TWA. It's not about who brings what to the table. Like it or not, you're all on the same team now. This is the equivalent of me telling an XJ guy that I want his -900 CA seat, even if he's been at XJ for 10 years. Sorry, you just didn't make it.

And there are the same stories at XJT and ASA, I'd bet. We've got here at 9E that have been on reserve....well, the whole time. They don't even know what a hard line looks like. I've been on reserve the whole time I've been in the left seat, and I'm not getting off of it any time soon. Is it fair for me to think all the XJ guys should go to the back of the line just because our management bought their management? No. What you're talking about isn't a "fair" list. It's a windfall for Skywest pilots, and if the lists DO merge, all that unity and brotherhood that's hyped during the union drives may as well be spit in the wind apparently.

I'm going to let him answer your other paragraph, but I'll mention that XJT has many of those stories, and more. XJT has 6 year FOs. Hell, my comrades and I have been on furlough since September 30th, 2008.

I'd like to see his thoughts if he didn't get hired at the right time and didn't see the left seat in less time than most of us have been on furlough.

Okay...breathe...sorry...I know I said I wouldn't get involved in this...

it is what it is. I'm not saying we should staple, but I just don't see how any bought carriers pilot should be placed in front of one of ours.

You think theres going to be "Unity" in this group if any other airlines pilot is given a captain slot when our FO's have been waiting patiently? Please.

I never said we want their flying. We are doing just fine with our own "flying", whatever that means.

mrivc211,

I simply find it frustrating that you would bring up your involvement in the SkyWest ALPA drive, yet two posts later completely undermine your union work by advocating an inequitable seniority list integration. It simply makes no sense. Pick one or the other.

So fence off all the Skywest flying for X number of years if it makes you feel better.
