Why are all of you union carriers so jelous of what we've got at SkyWest?
:whatever:
Apparently you're not aware of the work rules or contract XJT has.

Believe me, if a union is voted in, the work rules will change until a contract is negotiatied. The union will not change the work rules. It will remain the same.
Until I see Mesa's QOL anywhere in the vicinity of being close to SkyWest's, I'll have no confidence in ALPA's ability to make things at SkyWest any better than they are now. Is first year pay really that big a deal? I hope not, because I do not know a single first year FO that wants anything to do with ALPA. If we vote in ALPA just so first year pay goes up, what happens when our second year comes around and our pay gets cut so that new hires get a raise? Come on people, things are good at SKW. If it ain't broke don't fix it.Payrates/workrules at the regional level is the gravy ALPA can give. The meat and potatoes is the protection they give us in our careers.
I know XJT has good work rules, but so do we, and it dosn't cost us 2% of our salaries.:whatever:

So why should I pay 2% of my salary to get a union to spend 4 years negotiating a contract and by the time it goes into effect I'll have moved on?

The reason Mesa has a poor quality of life is because of the Freedom fiasco.
Eh, I believe it sucked before, during, and after the Freedom thing.
Even today with the Mesa and Freedom acting as one, per the court's ruling, it still sucks.
I personally believe its someone named JO that keeps things subpar.
No. Under the RLA, the company must maintain status quo ante until a new contract is negotiated (or until an impasse is declared). Skywest cannot legally change work rules once a bargaining unit is certified. (and effectively cannot change them during the electioneering process)Believe me, if a union is voted in, the work rules will change until a contract is negotiatied.

What SAPA fails to give is personal career protection.
Land on a taxiway during a circle to land at dusk? fuggetabutit
Kick the director of fltops out of his first class seat, for the crew rest seat (as per the contract)? no-job-4-u
Slide off a taxiway into a snowbank? crunched airplane= no job!

:argue: :banghead:
Ugh! Ever heard of a little thing called making it a better place to be for those who follow in your footsteps. Nothing personal, but your attitude disgusts me. That, right there, is a prime example of why ALPA didn't pass at Colgan.
WAKE UP PEOPLE! 2% of very little pay....is very little! We need to start thinking about the profession as a whole and not 'what's in it for ME.'
WAKE UP!
/rant....sorry, you hit a nerve.
Once again NOTHING against zmiller he has been around the block but...
Those people that got their job back paid tens of thousands of dollars to lawyers to get their jobs back because of those personal vendettas.
A reason for ALPA protection.
But implying that the company is currently firing people for no reason is just incorrect.
All in all Skywest is a good company with a good bunch of people there. Hopefully they get ALPA to protect those good people there if/when something DOES happen.
Honestly, instead of bashing the pay rates, which aren't that bad, but they are what they are, it is important we encourage the Skywest guys and gals to vote for union representation.

That to me is the best thing that ALPA provides.

Besides, I agree 1st year pay is a little low, but if after first year the pay is very competative, especially considering that our work rules give us pay higher than many, if not most, regional carriers even though the base rate is lower. You can't just look at the hourly number, there are just too many other factors going in to what we get paid. As anti-union as SkyWest is, we can kiss those work rules goodbye if we vote in a union and will have to strike just to get things back the way they were. No thanks.
