Severe clear ice. Thank you Kansas city

WOW, quite a perilous story. With personally ZERO ice experience, this story is quite an eye opener.

Glad you made it down safely and sounds like you did a tremendous job as did ATC.
 
Ice, (more then all other factors combined) scares the daylights out of me. The scariest time ever was when ice was not in the forecast and I was expecting a clear night, only lasted a few minutes, but it sure brought us down in a hurry.

While I don’t doubt that you encountered ice on that day I really don’t believe it was a bad as you are claiming. After several years of flying the van all over the country with a lot of it based in the U.P. of Michigan and I have never heard of somebody getting much ice that would hamper the 208 in that amount of time. Pilots with 10k plus in the van have never had problems with it responding like it did. I have heard of 4 and saw 4 inches of ice just not in that amount of time.
When the Caravan is covered in ice it doesn’t usually respond in the way you described; such as stalling 10 feet of the runway. That’s really not the airplane fault.
Severe ice like that is usually only a couple hundred feet thick and I believe that you should have been able to climb out of it without much problem especially in with only 1400lbs of fuel and 31lbs of freight.
As far as breaking out at 500agl and stalling 10 feet above the runway

So, uhhhhhh, you weren't there, and you don't know. You can be an ass, or you can take the guy at face value. Your choice. I'll believe him. Metars don't mean a damn thing and you know it. I've been on the approach to an airport with 10SM CLR, and not broken out at all and gone missed. As for "this kind of ice is usually only a few hundred feet thick," again, you weren't there and you don't know. Stop second guessing the guy and give him a pat on the back, he's alive. Even if it was the most ice he'd ever seen, and even if it wasn't 4", it still scared him enough to write about it. Don't be a tool.

I know I wasn’t there and that sometime metars really aren’t all that accurate.
I’m not trying to be an ass or a tool but I think this probably is an exaggeration of what really happened.
Like I said prove me wrong and I will apologize and admit I was wrong.

I think if you are going to tell a story like this it should accurate and if say you have pics to support it then it should not be a problem to post them.

On the internet? Yes. If I were him, I wouldn't be posting pictures anywhere of anything. Whether or not some random internet under-bridge-dweller believes what I say on here is of little interest to me, likewise whether they believe someone else. Now put that thing back in your pants.

I'm a pilot at the same company and I can confirm everything in his story. He is fortunate to be alive, and should not have to justify his actions to anyone.

BTW your statements about icing may be accurate in the north, but down here it can be different. What he likely encountered was freezing rain on a airframe that was already below freezing, which can put a LOT of ice on in minutes. None of this was forecast by anyone, nor had any other airplane in the area reported anything.


This is simply another example that despite taking every precaution and doing everything correctly, this is still a dangerous business.
