Second day of Airbus 330 school

16 years at the company and I've learned "Yes, the FAA Aeromed are a bunch of tyrants, that's good gouge, sir, we'll be glad to get you back on the line, can I have a ride to the airport?"

This guy was one foot out of the door with boeing on the 787 program (so he said)... I wanted to ask him to try decaf on his next a-period!

One example- The VS push/pull was malfunctioning on our last sim period... I was reminded of it when I went V/S 0 (level off by pressing) on my engine out when it malfunctioned again, and he starts yelling NO EXCUSES! when I mentioned "oh is this in the book?" (as I adjusted it back to zero)

"Dude it messed up yesterday, and now that I'm thinking about it I wanted to make sure it was in the book."

"NO EXCUSES, fly the profile."

"Ok... now, obviously I'm well within tolerances on this maneuver and have flown the profile in such a way that will require no debrief, what would I be making an excuse for?"

"It's in the book now."

(bangs head against glareshield)

Wot Wot WOT?!

Please tell me you were at least on probation. Bark at me in the sim like that and my training event is done for the evening. GRRRRRRRRR!!!

That was earlier this year. :) I always give everyone a chance or two. The CA I was paired with was a rather meek DTW guy that wasn't really on his game. It allowed Mr. NATCOsupreme to spread his plume.

I was in full passive aggressive mode by the end of the sim, which got to be pretty funny... more to tell over beers at some point!

Indeed.

One of those sessions where you aim simply to entertain yourself, eh? :)

G/S Mini= g/s "minimum". They shorten the word minimum to mini. I guess it sounds cooler.

MCDU= multi purpose control & display unit. I much prefer saying "McDoo" though :p

Is that like the guys who called flight level change (FLCH) "Felch?" "Felch me down to 230." Had to explain that one to at least three guys who got mad at me when I refused to use the word or acknowledge their use of it. The looks on their faces was classic!

What's the Boeing equivalent of Airbus groundspeed mini? Does it prioritize ground speed versus indicated?

Boeing doesn't look at groundspeed, at least on the older jets. It may on the 777 and 787 but I don't know. It spits out an approach speed and a ref speed (normally approach+5) which you can edit and then flies that if you are in FMS (managed) speed.

I know. the first time I heard that was in recurrent at NATCO and I gave my best "Aroo?! Felch you? WOT?" and then I said "Huh?" when he asked me for "VZF" then went on a tirade about how we have no standards on the south side, blah blah blah.

"Well, I'm New York so technically I'm "Northeast" but go ahead"

Without any Boeing experience, I can understand Felch. LNAV, I hear people say exactly like that "El-Nav." Same for VNAV "Vee-Nav" But FLCH has to be called "Flight Level Change" or "Flight Change"? First time in a Boeing jumpseat, I saw the three buttons LNAV/VNAV/FLCH and immediately assumed FLCH would be pronounced 'felch' because it just rolls of the tongue like that.

Eww.

Nah, it's "Flight Level Change" or "Level Change" here under "standard text".

I'm glad uhh, Felch rolls off your tongue, and there's nothing wrong with that, but… umm, www! :)
