Second day of Airbus 330 school

Once back in flight school I was headed to MCO out of ATL and was very surprised to find a 777 at the gate. Even then I was wondering why. Could they make money like this? I guess not.

Well yeah and no, but ultimately not really. Now there's some ATL-LAX legs on the 777, but they're largely repositioning the plane to LAX to fly Australia.

I guessed it was part of a repo after an international leg. Still the 777 must be designed to not have a lot of short cycles. I wouldn't know much about, it even more so at the airline level but even little citation 525s need to be flown about an hour minimum on average or the cycles outpace the hours flown and it cost a lot of money.

Sometimes the 777's would come in from overseas, then get put on a domestic turn like you saw.

But, for the most part, big planes gotta fly far places in order to maximize revenue.

I technically don't know, but I presume that it's actually a good idea because you might want to run a in-flight check on something if there was an ETOPS problem, but we can do those on an ETOPS flight while we're still technically, not on an ETOPS segment.

Or, umm, something like that.

Bossman says fly to Madrid, I fly Bossman's jet to Madrid, go to the hotel, drink Mahou and eat tapas! Bossman pays me.

Is the A330 eventually gonna be shuttered in favor of the A350? Has anyone from Toulouse called you personally and told you this?

I tend to miss the telephone calls where anyone from Toulouse, Seattle or Atlanta calls to inform me of their future plans! :)

Obvious snark on my part, but a real question. Lol, anyway. But you would think, right? The 330 is a 767 fighter. And the 350 can do the 330's mission better and cheaper. Dunno random thoughts in between homework.

The -200 is an 7ER killer and the -300 gives the 777-200ER a run for it's money in "select" situations.

The -200 has ridiculous range, but they didn't buy the -300's with the center fuel tanks.

The 350's, I have no idea.

You guys are getting all new 300's, right?

The new -300's are coming with the same fuel tanks as the -200s and with higher gross weight. That thing is gonna be a beast!

They have shown very little interest in the 350 thus far, subject to change on an hourly basis.

That's what the fleet manager said during the first day of GS!

I usually say "M-C-D-U" or "the box." I've always hated McDoo. I've learned to speak a lot of french, but for phoque's sake, I'm not saying that one.

I think it just stuck in my head along with "left lateral, everything else on the right", and "AWARE".

The -200's range with the center tanks is siiick.

The -300's with improved engines and the center tanks is going to be siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick.

Not once have I ever used aware. :) I cant remember what it means, even after an overzealous A-period instructor kept trying to get us to do it my last recurrent! It's so much easier just to follow the normal checklist flow and not add extraneous crap. I told him that I appreciate his added technique, but mine works better following standard flow.

It's really more of a bridge to get a ex-Boeing guy (c'est moi!) into the habit of setting the automation up for the approach.

I got a head full of book knowledge from "They way we do it on the line" types that are actually just 500 hour aviation university grads with frozen type ratings. Ha! :)

I suppose- the new checklist design really makes AWARE obsolete since APPR/DES is in the approach checklist. On that item, if you've forgotten, just go selected speed and activate APPR. Outside of that, it's the same thing that you did on the boeing except NO STAR and mashing the clear button 28 times.

That head butting was with a pretty senior DGS guy out on medical from NW. He was one of those that just wanted us to acknowledge how good he was. They need to bring me on as an IP on the 330 instead of them. I know as much as them about transoceanic, but can fingerbang the crap out of fifi. :D

16 years at the company and I've learned "Yes, the FAA Aeromed are a bunch of tyrants, that's good gouge, sir, we'll be glad to get you back on the line, can I have a ride to the airport?"
