Quasimoto Pilots

This is one of the more amusing threads I've seen in a while.
People can really get worked up about briefcases and mustaches, hats and trenchcoats, and while that is all VERY exciting stuff, it's interesting to see that there are people willing to close the door on a company because the employee's are enjoying themselves "too" much. That's all I want in life is to be around happy go lucky people.

The bottom line is that you should adhere to your company's published uniform policy and combine that with common sense. Personally, the litmus test I use is this question:

Would I feel uncomfortable walking into the chief pilot's office (specifically our most uniform-stringent CP) with my current appearance? Would the cheif pilot feel the need to say anything to me regarding my appearance if I walked into his office right now?

If the answer is yes, then I do what needs to be done to fix it (shave, get a haircut, iron, etc).

Precisely.

Besides, it's a lot easier to plead your case if someone reports you as unprofessional, if you at least show up looking like a professional.

If you get written up for something and then you show up out of uniform policy looking like a skateboarder, toast baby.

If someone says the slightest thing negative about their airline, they act like you've attacked their religion. The JetBlue guys are even worse about it. It just rubs me the wrong way.

Although it is gratifying to note that now jetBlue stock is down to sub-$7 and they have no fuel hedges, they've generally shut up. Remember how they used to crow everywhere that they were going to have 200 Airbii and take over the U.S. airline industry?

Well, now Neeleman and his pals have taken their profits, bailed and jetBlue is teetering on liquidation, they're not quite so vocal anymore. They're just hunkering down in JFK and LGB praying someone, anyone will buy them.

:laff:

Maybe Skybus will buy them and they'll merge together to form some sort of lumbering, hulking, ProtoScabosaurus? ;)

That would be interesting. You know scientists STILL don't know what ProtoScabosaurus's skin looked like. It would be really nice to have a modern example.

True, but I'm sure you would respond with facts and reason, not attacks. Take a look at any FI thread where someone says something even slightly negative about SWA. The response is quick and vicious:

"At least we haven't been in bankruptcy!"

"Your airline is pathetic!"

"You're just mad that you didn't get hired here!"

And so on, and so on. Like I said, you'd think you had attacked their very religion and reason for being. It's just fanatical. Nothing wrong with spirited debate with facts and logic, but fanatical attacks just seem over the top.

Sorta like arguing about uniforms, huh? Some people are adamant about some things while other are more laid back. I've worked for both SWA and XJT (not as a pilot, though), and after working at PCL, I can DEFINATELY see where Chicaga is coming from. I STILL defend SWA, and I don't even work there anymore. Of all the companies I've worked for so far, they treated me better than anyone else. I actually felt like my managers cared about me. When my grandmother died, the base manager made sure I could get home. There were open seats, but he still offered to "must ride" both myself and my wife if we needed it. Pinnacle would want me to bring in a program from the funeral in order to get the days off, probably call and try to JM me during the service and wonder why I couldn't come back sooner.

Zap, didn't mean to make ya feel old, man. I heard Poison on a CLASSIC rock station the other day. Made me want to reach for a walker and some depends.....

so... what hair style would everyone prefer? I mean I have mine short and I guess there is a slight spike in the front- I didn't know that was offending everyone in the industry!

I don't like the leather jackets- the PCL guys wear em though. Fedex has been given a good rap on here for dressing well and the first thing my dad told me after I passed my FO checkride at PCL was to make sure I give myself enough time to get my shirts tailored before OE starts. He also has the leather jacket though so maybe he isn't a good example.

Professionalism in the eyes of the public is not a smooth landing or a good call on changing alternates- they only SEE and HEAR you outside the gate. They do look. I keep my shirts pressed, pants go to the cleaners, shoes shined, and try to keep myself looking proper at all times. IPODs are awesome- but there is no need for them walking through the airport, a deadhead is another story. I don't own the hat- it's not required and like kellwolf said, it looks rather ridiculous. I may only make crap for wages but who knows when that jumpseater will be interviewing you in a few years at your dream job.

Always dress for the job you want, not the job you have.

I will keep my hairstyle though so say what you want. The parted combover will come back sometime in my 30's.

<pondering> Why is it that of the 3 carriers that this board's loudest ALPA cheerleader has worked for, only 1 has been ALPA... and that 1 is one of the industry's biggest misfits? </pondering>

I don't get very many comments from my travelling buddies about uniforms...but I constantly get comments about 12 year old looking pilots. There are some young looking dudes out there.

My neighbor just flew to NYC on CMR and she was mortified at how young one of the pilots looked.

I'll typically let the old gray haired dude be the visible portion of the crew during greeting passengers. That's what they want to see.

---------------------------------------

Being a young CMR guy myself..... if i'm not busy with paperwork on a quickturn i like to take the time and stand by the doorway as passengers get off the airplane, thank them for flying with us, have a nice day....etc....
Just yesterday after deplaning in ATL, the passengers were still waiting outside for the pink tag bags by the time i had finished the walkaround- i had noticed the rampies were having a hard time with the cargo door- they couldn't get it open for some reason- so I took it upon myself (in uniform) to approach everyone waiting outside to tell them what was going on- ramp needed some more assistance for door- and that they will get their bags as soon as possible. My past jobs were customer service related....and flying corporate before airline also brings some perspectives and points into my current work for customer service.

I'm 23 - started flying the RJ at 22, and i took my 1st flight lesson starting at 12yrs old.

Many people make a comment on my age, and most people are polite and nice about it. Many just make a polite comment, and i say "Thank you". Some that are nervous about my age.... I tell them that i've been flying for 11 years (which is a true statement), I have a degree in airline operations.....i'm tested to the same standards as the "old guy they expect to see", etc. etc. And that makes them happy and they go on.

I do wear the uniform hat , even through i put a little gel in my hair (not enough to be spikey or like some modern hairstlyle most people expect), even if i get "hat hair"-i still wear the hat.
And I do wear the uniform blazer jacket, or sometimes the leather jacket if conditions warrent. I'm a firm believer in making the whole uniform look good and professional.

And as far as the whole old vs. young guy thing that passengers "want to see"- here's a good story:

After landing (i had just finished my leg of flying), i'm doing my paperwork during a quickturn (so i'm pretty much stuck in my seat working as passengers are getting out), an older gentleman walks by the flightdeck and made the comment to the captain (who was also older with grey hair) that was standing up for some reason that "man...i'm glad there are still some old folks like ourselves flying...."

The captain laughed......then told the man.....yeah thats true.....BUT HE FLEW YOU HERE....and pointed to me.... i overheard the conversation and added my hello and wave before the person left.... so it is possible for us "young pups" to be professional and do it right too.

As long as you have qualified supervision, of course.

Well....the PIC was always the PIC, of course he is always in charge-i'm not challeneging that. If thats my "qualified supervision" requirement.

It was only my leg to fly-and like all of them- i'm glad to bring people to their next destinations safely - and this captain just brought it to the attention of the passenger that it was my flying that brought them to the destination that day.

Your "stick and ruddering" true. However, the Captain was the one responsible for the safety of the passengers and crew, not you.

I just shot milk and Frosted Mini Wheats out my nose, that's great!

Make sure you emphasize that when you go into the sim for your next checkride. I feel like I'm watching one of those CRM videos on how a CA shouldn't act.

I can still remember the video now, they used the actual CVR from a flight. The CA says to the FE: "What's the difference between a duck and a co-pilot?" The FE says, "I dunno, what?", The CA chuckles "A duck can fly!" Good thing thing the CA is the only one responsible for the safety of the PAX and crew, because he didn't listen to his FO and he ran off the runway up in Ketchikan.

Wake up from your wet dream. "teetering on liquidation"? - good one. I think what you mean is slowed growth. Our numbers were best when we were taking one plane a month. We got away from that for a while in an overly aggressive manner. The pace had to come down. The economy's crappy right now, fuel prices are...well you know, the dollar is weak. Our stock is in the crapper but it ain't gonna stay there. Look at your own stock compared to where it was a year ago. You'll be parking planes if you keep giving your routes to Horizon.

While your gloating about our current stock price, read or re-read this article: http://quicktake.morningstar.com/AlertNewsWire/ticker.asp?ticker=ALK&alert=J0002

Nice having that pointed out to you isn't it? Of course this post could all be in vain since you still haven't stated where you work.

If we were praying for someone to buy us, we'd be putting out an ad in the classifieds like United has for the past several years.
