Well now I'm a little worried about the vision tests can anyone let me know more details how do they administer it? do you cover an eye with a hand do they give you a black thing to hold to cover your eye? whats the process if you don't pass it can you wear your glasses or contacts?

You can test with your glasses. The standard is:

FAA Order 3930.3A said:
"... 20/200 in each eye separately, with correction to 20/20 in each eye. Glasses or contact lenses are permitted."

I found the message from PUBNAT3 that states not to reapply....

Prior experience or training in air traffic control is not required. Applicants will be evaluated based on their responses to the online application. You may qualify for this position on the basis of work experience, college education, or a combination of both. TO QUALIFY BASED ON WORK EXPERIENCE, INTERESTED INDIVIDUALS MUST DOCUMENT THREE YEARS OF PROGRESSIVELY RESPONSIBLE FULL-TIME (40 HOURS PER WEEK) EXPERIENCE THAT DEMONSTRATES THE POTENTIAL FOR LEARNING. Progressively responsible experience might include for example: an increase in leadership duties, working with less supervision, or an increase in financial responsibility. You are encouraged to include any experience that is directly related to the air traffic control occupation. TO QUALIFY BASED UPON EDUCATION, APPLICANTS MUST DOCUMENT A FULL 4-YEAR COURSE OF STUDY LEADING TO A BACHELOR'S DEGREE. You may also qualify by combining your work experience and college credits; one year of undergraduate study (30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours) is equivalent to 9 months of general work experience. What George said regarding wearing contacts / glasses.

Regarding the vision testing at your PEPC:

1. They use those projector looking machines first. If you can't read the 20/20 line they'll say, okay, sit back and relax for a minute, okay, now lean back into and it and read line 4. "I can't read it"... Well, just start reading what you think it is. "I can't read it". Okay, now sit back and relax for a minute, okay, no lean back into it, ::she beats on the machine cause the light won't come on::, now can you see line 4? "Nope, i can't read it"... Well guess, what does it look like? "Looks like a line of light".

2. Okay, let's try the wall chart then. Cover your Left eye and read the line above the red line. ::Read it just fine:: Okay, great. Now cover your Left eye and read the line above the red line. "I just had my left eye covered, you mean my right?". Oh, yes, your right eye. ::strains to see it, tries to read it out loud, can't see it well::. Okay, keep trying, tell me what you see. "Spaceship, Gorilla, Margarita, " Oh, darlin', no they're letters, read the letters. "That's all I see". Well, you're 20/30 in your left eye. What they'll probably have you do is go see an Optometrist and retest, their tests are usually better.

3. Go to the Optometrist. Read the 20/20 line both near and far with no problem "I don't know why they said you were 20/30, you have perfect vision" ::shakes her head, fills out my form and I am on my merry way::
 
So I'm writing this from Seattle after having found a cheap flight up here... since I intend to put it down as one of my preferences, it seemed like a good idea to pay them a visit, see if I could meet some people and find out whether I liked the area.

I didn't have time to visit the SeaTac tower, but they fit me in for a visit at the ARTCC today. For those who haven't visited a Center yet, I highly recommend it. I've visited two towers -- a small one run by Robinson Aviation and Austin, which is mid-sized -- and while both were kind enough to take me around, it was kind of a feeling of "here's the tower... any questions?"

Centers, on the other hand, have the size and capacity to have someone tell you the history of the place, take you through all of the different systems, let you plug in, talk with the controllers for a while, and so on. Plus, ZSE really had a great group of people -- several came up wanting to meet me, see why I was interested in their place, answer questions, and make me feel like they'd like to have me be a part of their team.

They really did a great job. Previously I was feeling more or less settled on choosing Terminal when the preferences finally come in, but now, having seen a Center and how the environment and training are different... I'm thinking that it may be better to start off there.

Anyway, a couple things relevant to our group that I picked up on... for one, and this may not be news to others here but it was to me, word is that the Houston Center may be shut down in the near future (near as in a year or two, I believe). As the person who took me around explained, Houston's facility was leased but the expiration date is coming soon and the FAA isn't sure whether they'd like to renew it -- they think that they may be able to pass control off to the surrounding Centers. If that's one someone where you were hoping to end up, you may want to rethink it. Or better, check in with a more reliable source than some guy on the internet... don't base your future career on what I heard without verifying it.

More interesting, though, was that two or three different people mentioned that they were told that the next panels were meeting in January. Ammo has already mentioned hearing that time from the head of HR (right?), so this seems to confirm it... it's nice to have a clear idea again of what we can expect.

On a related note, don't drink before your eye exam.

thanks for the insight on the eye test I have really good vision in one eye but not so great vision in the other I scheduled a meeting with the optomitrist. If everything goes well and I can pass his test with 2020 in my horrible eye I plan on visiting the Miami center again I visited it once pre 9-11. That's what really got me interested in this field! anyone else thinking about heading to Florida or at least chosing it as their geo pref, just to be let down when you get an offer. Man I really hope this test goes well on friday I really want to be an air traffic controller just like everyone else. Anyone else visited a center? If so what was your experience? I was told to just chose Florida as my Geo Pref and only have one Geo Pref is that even possible doesn't sound like a good idea to me???

I get it I was only kidding because someone before me said don't drink before you take your eye test because someone else mentioned looking at the vision test going tequila rum ext. Just a joke no worries.:p
 
just thought pubnat3 should know...

i have a friend who applied to pubnat2 who is turning 31 in december. he didnt receive an email and when he called up to see if there was another way in since this was his only shot the woman told him (stupidly since he will over the age by this time) to wait for the next panels that will be meeting mid january, and WILL DEFINATELY include both pubnat 3 & 4. good news for you, bad news for him since now he cant be a controller. good luck.


anyone here gonna try for ZNY?
