Pubnat 5/6

My husband is in the Marine Corps and will (hopefully) be stationed in San Diego. From the responses I've gotten about ZLA (Palmdale)... this is not somewhere I really want to raise my children...SO...the question:

Do I tell them at Chicago that I don't want ZLA? What happens? Do I get bumped to the back of the application line? Do they give me another choice of areas? Do they say 'thanks for playing bye-bye'?

Any ideas?

From what I understand, everything everyone else is saying is correct. If you are invited to a PEPC and try to ask for a change of facility while you are there, you're done. BUT I have heard that people in your situation should go through with the PEPC, don't say anything about wanting to transfer, and then AFTER you get your TOL call and talk to your HR rep. He/She might be able to help you, and they won't pull you out of the process just for asking. I don't know if you'll get what you are looking for, but you never know.

My question is, you say that your husband is going to hopefully be stationed in San Diego, but what happens if he isn't? Where could he possibly be stationed? Arizona? Germany? I'm just wondering what you will do if he is stationed somewhere other than SoCal?

As for the living where you work thing...my husband is going to be driving at least 45 min to 2 hours to work, depending on where we live. Not for community safety reasons, but for cost of living reasons. It might be a sacrifice you have to make in order to provide the best life for your family. While it won't be easy, as everyone else is saying, get CPC and get out if you don't like the area. With all the hiring the FAA is doing, you'll have pretty ok seniority in just a few years (think mass retirements and LOTS of new hires).

Good Luck though...it's is a hard process and lots of people don't even get to where you are. Really think it through before you throw it away (which is what you will be doing if you ask for a transfer at the PEPC). :)

I just have a question to anyone more knowledgeable then myself (i.e. ANYONE reading this)... and maybe this is the wrong thread, but I don't know where else I should ask.
Anyway.

I am going to the PEPC in Chicago on June 22, and was selected for ZLA apparently, from my choices of San Diego County, Orange County, LA COunty, and North Carolina.

Thanks in advance for any info.

DO NOT haggle at the PEPC. It is not a discussion. You sign or you leave. People have argued over it before and just turned out look like colossal jerks!

Accept Palmdale and call your HR rep every hour of every day until you get through to them. Tell them you want to change. You can ask people here and it is possible that there is someone who wants to swich. Although, there were no San Diego selections this PUBNAT, there are people who are still waiting to go to OKC from 2, and 3/4 who are SD and might want to trade. I know it is far away from your husband, but Freemont is a great place too.

If you cannot change pre-PEPC, sign your TOL and try to change after the PEPC. There will be a long wait to get into OKC and the FAA will play ball with you if there is a facility that needs you sooner. You can also brooker a trade with TOLs if you get the right HR rep.

I'm sorry if I scared you in that other thread. With Edwards there is a lot of moral support in the area for Government families and your husband might easily be able to transfer there. Also, Canyon Country and Acton really are wonderful places to raise a family if you are willing to commute.

And lastly, as much as I sudder over living there...if you do choose to turn it down, please send it my way.

F.Y.I. from my point of view. I turned down FAI the day before the PEPC in LA. I apologized for the last min e-mail as I had just visited FAI and decided it was not for my family and I. That was that and I thought I was done for. Luckily I got picked up for exactly what I wanted. Do what you will however I consider myself extremely lucky to get picked back up. You just never know.

To the best of my knowledge, SAF & AEG are contract towers. ABQ and ROW are FAA.
That is correct. ABQ and ROW are the only FAA facilities in New Mexico...well besides ZAB.

So I'm gonna go ahead and say there is no chance you'll get SAF or AEG.

I'll gladly take it. They're both up downs I'm assuming?
They are infact both up down facilities.

The upside to ROW is that they are not a 24 hour facility(Only day/evening), so you'd never have to work nights. I'm sure that is a big plus for some people. ABQ is a level 9 facility, ROW is a level 7 facility. Both offer the same locality pay.

I gotta agree with you WoH. I don't get on this forum much anymore because I get so tired of reading about how 'pissed' people are about the process. Get over it. You signed up, you aren't the only one who didn't get picked. I'm glad someone else feels the way I do.

First off, I've been on these forums since last year, and while I don't methodically check them on a daily basis, I haven't seen the aforementioned "pissed" people you're referring to. Also, what exactly is the point of a forum based on PUBNAT 5 and 6, if not for people who applied to these positions. Seems to me it's quite justifiable for me to state my complaints about the process since you and several others have already confirmed that over 90% did not get selected. Guess there's a few of us eh? Also, I didn't sign up for anything. I applied. Since PUBNAT 1. Obviously. there's plenty of frustration here. Thanks for the words of advice to "get over it" though, epecially from someone who was already previously picked.

.

I have said all of these things before...but I suppose they bear repeating:

-The next PUBNAT is opening on July 6th.
-It will be valid for all panels for 1 year
-You will list your Geo-prefs on the application and will not be able to change them
-There is no way to guess where to pick
-If there is a comments section list any (maybe a couple) specific facilities where you would like to work
-Make sure to also list that you are willing to work throughout the nation, and territories (if indeed you are)
-Just in case they do let you keep applying, continue to check ASAP every Monday
-If you no someone in ATC...anyone at all. Put their name in the "person who referred you" section

-Call all the facilities that you are willing to work at in the states you picked
-Ask to speak to the ATM (Air Traffic Manager) to introduce yourself and get your name out there. Offer to send them a resume.
-Ask to visit the facilities that you really really want, visit them as many times as you can
-Work your ATMs to get the numbers for regional managers. Tell them your name...say it often, and tell them you want the job.

It might not work. But they have quite a few years of hiring left.

Yes, these do bear repeating because there's quite a few of us, and I assume your husband included, that would like to understand the process a little better. This post is a little more constructive that your previous, it sucks oh well post. The system should fit everyone's needs, hence, a public sector position. It offers a civil service exam, which from all accounts seems, worthless. In all other areas of the public sector, you're usually given a list number. which should be designated depending on your Geo Prefs compared to other applicants.

I understand there is no obligation, but the arbitrary nature of the process is downright frustrating. Anyway, I received the dreaded "another candidate, picked" message today, so I'll probably be on here sporadically, until the next cycle.

Good luck to all who are still being selected, and have been selected. See you at PUBNAT 8. Thanks for the advice.

If you want the job, do not turn this down.

There is an individual on Stuck Mic who turned down an offer for PUBNAT1, has applied for every subsequent application, and has not been re-selected.

With the number of people in the applicant pool, they're just not going to fool with someone who is going to be picky. I doubt they black list you if you do turn down an offer, but the odds are not really in your favor to get another shot at this.

So if you can accept that you may not get another shot at this career, then do what is best for you. But if you can be flexible, then I'd take it.

Man, now I have to refresh my email and ASAP every 10 minutes, as of this moment, still under consideration for PUBNAT6 but no email.

Oh man, got the email about 3 minutes after my last post. Looks like New York ARTCC for me!!!! I am so freakin happy. Sorry guys, don't mean to rub it in.:nana2:

I received an email for an interview in Memphis for ZME. I won't be going the PEPC route due to Chicago already being booked. I'm excited!!!
