Since when are COLAs tax free!? That's great news...additional take home money. (esp in CA, where my cola is 32%)

Or is this JUST a Alaska/Hawaii thing?

I believe the FAA facilities in Hawaii are: the Honolulu Control Facility (HCF), ITO, and OGG.

HCF on the island of Oahu is far from dinky. It's a level 11. It's pretty intense there. They get a mix of different traffic. It's also a big fuel stop for many international flights. It's an awesome facility. It's actually located on the Hickam Air Force Base that's right next to the Honolulu International Airport. If you ever get the chance you should take a tour. I don't know too much about OGG(Maui) and ITO(Big Island) though as I live on Oahu.

Cool, I've been to Hickam before. There were a bunch of folks parachuting! Looks like fun :)

When I was saying Dinky, I was thinking more along the lines of the airports on some of the smaller islands. Are their ATC facilities not run by the FAA or something?

I'm not 100% certain on who runs the towers on the other islands(Kauai, Lanai, and Molokai) but I vaguely recall from my HCF tour that they are responsiple for the airspace covers the whole island chain. Now don't quote me on it but I believe some of the smaller airports may be contracted out. I guess I should have paid more attention while on my HCF tour but I couldn't help but be distracted by all the blinking a/c on the radar screens!!!:D

I thought the HCF was in the Diamond head crater. What am I thinking of?

I believe the Center Radar Approach moved to Hickam Air Force Base a few years ago. It was originally located in the Diamond Head Crater.

Re: ***PUBHI***

This announcement is terminal only (the Alaska one is terminal and en route).

How does this work out in Hawaii? Is their center a combo with other types of facilities? Or is it just like the ones on the mainland?

HCF is different from HNL

for fun, you can go to www.skyvector.com and look at the VFR terminal map for Hawaii. Gives you a sense of how many airports there are (although many are air force bases, or contract towers)

I would much rather work somewhere in my area however it would be pretty cool to work here for a few years then transfer out. Sounds good on paper, but I hear transferring out is a pain.

Over the last few days I've been hearing radio announcements on some hip hop station here for open ATC positions with the FAA. Caught me by surprise:p.

i noticed that the pubak and pubhi both said that the test will be offered in those places only. if you cant make it to hawaii or alaska to test can we apply?

If you apply for those, you'd have to test for them in AK or HI... however, you might test for your 6/30 application before they do the testing for PUBAK and PUBHI, in which case you wouldn't have to go to AK or HI to test.

If not...you get a nice trip to Alaska or Hawaii....hope you get Alaska in the summer and Hawaii in the winter ;)

I applied for Hawaii and AK after taking the test! Woo!

I know they will be holding a local PEPC for both. I wonder if people here in the Lower 48 will have to travel to AK or HI for the PEPC or if we will be able to get an interview or PEPC on the mainland.

Of course, Pub2 will take this option off of the table if all goes well.
Still waiting on the geo email....:banghead:

Well, the FAA might not do a PEPC for HI/AK.
PEPC is meant to process a large number of applicants, so it may not be practical for just one state. (might have to travel to a regular PEPC or do the standard step-by-step method)

:yeahthat:I was thinking the same thing. But since they had announcements about the openings all day/night long on the radio I was thinking maybe a PEPC could be a possibility. But 3 seconds later I thought "NAH!!!". Because really, how many openings could there be at HCF, OGG, and ITO, right??? Maybe all the applicants that live in Hawaii will have to go the NON PEPC route.
