PSA CRJ-700 AA midair collision

Or, and hear me out because this is gonna sound like absolute crazy talk. But maybe instead we stop the big old mean government from interfering in the All Powerful Free Market and let airlines decide what's best. We can best accomplish this by not putting artificial barriers on them massively overscheduling airports or burdening them with pesky rules and laws forcing them to actually deliver on their promises or having to compensate passengers for their failures. The faster we get government out of the business of regulating air travel the faster we will get reliable high speed intercity rail networks.

(Yes, it's sarcasm people, well, except the fact I do wish we had a reliable high speed rail network all across the country.)

Except allowing connections is the only way flights on RJs to podunk-ville work from DCA. And heaven forbid a congress critter have to schlep their way out to IAD or BWI to fly home non-stop.
Now that the Metro goes all the way to the Dulles, they could handle some of those flights. If there isn't one already, if feasible, maybe there could be an express train from downtown DC to the airport. Tokyo has express trains to Narita. There are plenty of major airports in America that aren't close to downtown. Members of Congress shouldn't be so entitled.

The one and only time I did DCA was the middle of summer, 95°, and even an -800 couldn’t take the 5 knot tailwind to match the flow ATC was running. Lucky for us they turned the airport around so we didn’t have to sit and wait for a gap for an opposite direction departure. I was left less than impressed with everything about the airplane. Maybe if more Congress critters and their leech-like hangers on took the silver line to IAD we could actually get funding for transit in this country.

Sidebar; this is the answer on a quiz in my class on how to increase airport capacity. It’s lifted directly from the reading of an FAA text and was meant to be an easy one, but I get wrong answers quite a bit.

“Runways. You need more runways. That’s it. Partial credit for your hand drawn approach sequence blowing through several traffic flows, a mountain, and most of downtown.”

A few years ago, that was all the rage with the politicians.

“START POURING ASPHALT!”

Umm, a few things, senator…

We have issues with our DCA-SJU flights on 321's when the conditions aren't ideal for rwy 1

It’s a 2 to 3 train transfer to get to IAD (depending on what line you start on and where you are) and there’s a LOT of stops.

WMATA barely functions as it is. An express train is utterly beyond their capabilities right now.

There's not enough redundant trackage out that way if I remember correctly, too, even if they were 'functional.'

Sadly, IsMetroOnFire dot com appears to be no longer a thing. (I have an absolutely morbid sense of humor as a transit advocate and user, I guess.)

The great thing about Reston is that nothing cool or historic is compelling you to leave your hotel room.
The last time I was there coincided with Carter's funeral and as much as I wanted to go see things it's a long way to Navy Memorial and it was cold.

(I've been looking for a good peacoat/overcoat to little avail [must fit 6'5", must be black, having a little difficulty with that for some reason], and the thought of leaving the building in those temperatures was unappealing. Was cold.)

Fun fact: Reston was entirely master-planned. There’s a basic HOA that covers the entire city. We almost moved there but outdoor pets were not allowed.

I lived in Reston in the 1980’s. It was strange.

A car in your driveway with expired tags was another capital offense.

Lived in one where I was cited for lifting the hood on my truck to check the oil.

Code enforcement guy didn’t like me laughing at him and calling him the fun police and not a real cop. Dude had a beater V6 charger with a light bar and anything it was hysterical. I don’t think HOAs are the problem, it’s the people that work for them that think being a hall monitor for adults is a cool job.

I sold my place and moved when affordable housing caused a crime wave in my neighborhood.
