Professionalism across the industry

Anyone remember Higher for Hire? Baloo's uniform looked pretty comfortable!

Great, now I have the theme from Tail Spin going through my head. :)

Here's another way to look at it: You've got two Saabs side by side. One has paint chipping off of it, you can see the base coat and there might be a few rivets missing. The other is in pristine condition. However, both fly EXACTLY the same. Which do you think the passengers are gonna line up to get in? You might be the most professional person in the world attitude wise, but if you come to work with a wrinkled shirt and unshaven, people WILL judge you. While apperance alone does not equal professionalism, it's a huge piece in the puzzle.

That's a good way to look at it, and I agree. It's still shameful that we as humanity haven't evolve past petty thinking like that, even I am one that still judges from time to time.

Is appearance the only aspect of professionalism?

I'm not meaning to snuff out the conversation, but when I originally asked the question, I had a lot more in mind that how pilots wear their uniforms.

The way pilots treat the other crewmembers, the passengers, their attitude towards rules, how they act on their days off, etc. are all a big part of professionalism in my mind. Have those things changed at all?

I'd say the attitude towards passengers has changed, but that is mainly due to the passenger's overall change in attitude. Back in the day, travelling was seen as a luxury and people treated it that way. People would come on the flight dressed up and on good behavior. Now, we've got flying trailer parks, people wearing ripped up shorts and flip flops and people screaming at the gate agent b/c they can't carry on their 800 lbs bag. That, I guess, is the price you pay for bringing flying to the masses. It's very difficult to treat someone with professionalism and respect when they're slinging profanities at you b/c they won't get to the Motel 6 in time to catch the NASCAR race.

Ehh, how I act on my days off is my own business. How I act in uniform is "first officer Taylor" and my employer's business.

Oh, this one is easy. NEITHER! - They go for the barbie jet parked next door and then looked confused when they're herded towards the cropduster. :D

Really? How many DUIs can you get and still be First Officer Taylor?

Driving under the influence is illegal.

Surfing Persian Kitty is not! :)

That's exactly it.

I'd prefer to grow back my goatee, grow my hair out a little longer than it is, put my five piercings back in and wear all black. Heck, that's how I dress when I'm not flying for a living. Personally, I think the most freakish looking people I've ever seen were easily some of the smartest, most laid back people I've ever met. But most of the world doesn't view it like that and if I want to continue to be employed then I've gotta play the game like everybody else (I already asked my boss if I could put plugs in my ears, he said it was cool if a wore a helmet to work everyday. I might take him up on it...).

Do I think the game is BS? Yes, of course. I couldn't be the counter culture freak that I am and not believe that. Do I think it's an unfortunate part of our society? Of course, but I'm not flying for a living to change how people think about the way I'd prefer to dress; I can do that in my time off.

That is unless I can get a job flying a jet for Hot Topic...
