WATERFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. -
A plane has crashed at Oakland County International Airport in Waterford Township.
Sky 4 video from over the scene shows a plane down in the grass with several emergency crews surrounding it.
An ambulance and a medial helicopter are on the scene.

Looks like the pilot requested to turn around at 100ft and return to land at the airport. RIP. Sad stuff.

"Tower, 26 Quebec, we're a little overweight, we're going to have to come back and land ___ _____..."

"26 Quebec, uh, can you bring it to 9R, and you can just bring 'er back for 9R, a right turn, or, on the grass is fine." (Second man in tower suggests landing in the grass during this transmission to which Tower replies as stated. Appears these two gentlemen in the tower saw an airplane just failing to climb).

Cleared for take-off on 9L. Says he is overweight just 1 minute and 55 seconds later after being cleared.

Terrible. :(

Brand new private pilot from the WMU program, taking his family for their first flight. Lived in the same dorm with him last year, he was a nice kid. Kind of surreal for me right now, but this was the first personal loss for me in aviation. R.I.P. Troy

Not being crass, but him saying they were overweight seems to suggest that he knew it and took off anyways. Inexcusable if that's the case.

This is horrible.

Can you imagine being the mother? You see your son so proud. But then his terrible mistake unfolds and ends up killing him, his step father, and brother in law. The rental plane is destroyed and you are burned to near death, transported to the hospital, and then kick the bucket yourself.

The rental rate was likely too excessive, with his student loans, and he was trying to get everybody into one flight instead of two.

The first part of your post is a good point. The second part is insensitive speculation.
