Pilots who annoy me...

Yes. Please tell us what runway you are clear of. Unless you are at an airport with only one runway.

Someone once tried to lecture a buddy of mine once about this. We have runway 4-22 at I69. One strip of pavement. He reported clear of the active. Someone comes on the frequency and says very condescendingly, "And just which active runway would you be clear of?" Doesn't take too much effort to realize that, no matter which direction planes are landing, clear of the active is clear of the active.

Yeah, in that scenario it makes sense so I don't make a deal even though it's not really standard phraseology. But a lot of the local podunk fields have weirdo taxiway setups so that after clearing one runway, you have to cross another or even back-taxi. I'll often be working on the short runway with a student doing short field ops, even if the wind favors the other one a bit, since the amount of traffic at most of these places could best be described as "minimal". In these cases, a "clear of the active" call does no good whatsoever.

Totally agree with you here.

True enough. But if the pilot reports clear of 22 instead of clear of active, then other pilots who are approaching to land and might have just switched freqs would now know that currently traffic is using 22 instead of 4. That helps give them a more accurate picture of what's going on in the pattern without using up any additional time on the freq. Both reports work, but one is clearly better than the other. Why not use the better one?

That's why you ask for an airport advisory! :buck:

:sarcasm::sarcasm::sarcasm:

Yeah, I see what you're saying. I'll try to make that a habit.

Just a guess....for all of the people here who get annoyed by traffic calls, I am willing to bet that YOU would be the first person to raise hell if you were involved in an accident/incident with another aircraft who didn't make a call....HYPOCRITES!:banghead:

When I read this thread, I can't help but remember...

:yup::yup::yup:

Oh, naaaaaaaaggers...right. Naggers, of course.

Yeah thats really funny.. :whatever:

Maybe I'm a bitter person, but there never seems to be a shortage of pilots on the other end that annoy the hell out of me.

For example:

Pilots who are flying an ILS, on an IFR flight plan, announce out of no where that they are now "IMC" Congrats, no one cares. (I can understand if ATC gives traffic call, but out of nowhere? common)

Pilots who abuse the hell out the air to air freq and announce their position every 30 seconds when no one else is around for miles. Don't worry I think you sound really cool on the radio too :sarcasm:. Nickel up or go-guns if you want to talk to someone at length, especially when there are ten thousand 172's in a square mile of airspace who actually should be talking to each other to avoid making the local headlines.

And these a-holes make me want to pull over to the side, get out of my airplane and beat them senseless. Pilots who fly 500' and 500' offshore in what ever weekend warrior plane they can rent. That giant 40x100 sign with a beer bottle on it moving at the same rate as me gives me a reason to be that low, what is yours?

And finally, If I can see you before you see me when I'm towing a banner, I should be able to take your license.

Please feel free to add.

Ok

While training and CFI'ing, I would say "Clear runway 17-35" (uncontrolled field); people switching to the frequency should have an idea where the winds are and make their own decision. If it's uncontrolled, they can land whatever way they like. Uncontrolled airports have "runways in use", controlled airports have "active runways". People can say whatever they like though.

I seriously can't believe what Im reading in this thread. Complaints about position reports? Complaints about "clear of the active"? You have got to be kidding me. Aren't those factors that contribute to the safety of flight? We are talking about uncontrolled airspace, relying on eachother to keep one another safe. We should omit "clear of the active" because it annoys somebody? I am shocked. I am seriosuly beset by such complaints. If I am in uncontrolled airspace I will give a position report. And I will report my position more frequently if I am in a congested practice area. And I always report clear of the active. Is any of this unsafe? Throw me a bone here because I always thought reporting clear of the active and my general position in uncontrolled airspace is the safe thing to do.

:yeahthat:Great point.
I also love flying in the pattern and having a pilot complain about not "seeing" us or other pattern traffic on his screen. I didn't know transponders were required at every airport.:D

I don't need you to tell me you're no longer on the runway. If I can't see that, I shouldn't be flying. It clogs up the radio and is completely useless.

Seriously? I always announce clear of/entering onto a runway, and I appreciate it when others do the same. It's one more layer (however small) of safety and I hardly think it constitutes "clogging up the radio".

I've seen WAY too many bone-head moves at uncontrolled fields to bank my safety and/or ticket on the notion that the other guy ought to know what they, or I, am doing. Make as many position reports as you want, as often as you want. I would much rather be irritated than dead.

:eek: You've got a RADIO in your banner plane??? The company I towed for didn't even have an electrical system in the plane.

Turn the radio off and listen to a day of airplane noise. Talk about boredom.

Flying is for the most part *always* boring. Just like it should be.

Isn't there one of these threads every 4.3 months?

airplanes r neat :nana2:
Rock on!! :rawk:

I thought it was strange that the complaint about clear of the "active" sounded like a complaint about position reports.

The usual complaint, and a valid one, is that, since at a non-towered airport, pilots can land on any runway they choose, "the active" is meaningless and "clear of runway 23" a much better position report.

"Clear of the active" doesn't give much information at places like this: http://img.airnav.com/ap/02584

I completely agree. I usually give the runway but occasionally I will just say "BFE traffic, N123 is clear of the active at BFE airport." Whenever somebody says clear of the active I take it as a general statement that they are clear of the "runway pavement" regardless if it's 9 or 27. But you make a good point, especially with the provided link.

Keep it safe, ya'll!
