Pilots and Tattoos

I have always heard that even if you have a small tattoo that is covered up by your shirt that the airlines frown on that. Just wondering if anyone has run into this or heard of this. I know when you take your medical that the doctors will write them down and there location. But is this a deal breaker?

as long as they are not visible they should be ok. Also note that in the case of arms, you might not like covering them up. At my company if you wear a long sleeve shirt you have to wear the blazer or jacket over it. Fine in the winter, but walkaround in houston during august.....

I'd say hands, neck, face, etc tattoos would be deal breakers, but just about anything else that is not visible with your uniform on would be fine.

This is not true. Im sure if you have some massive neck tattoo or something then that might be a problem. My father has a few on his fore arm from his younger military days and was a CA for United. My cousin who was just hired by CAL has a half sleeve. I asked him about it and he said as long as you make an attempt to cover it while your working its not a problem. I know a few pilots with sleeve type tattoos and have seen many pilots in airports walking around with their shirt sleeves rolled up exposing tattoos.

dont tell grandma about the tattoo on my *********************

thats alot of stars... let me know if you decode it...

basically the one I would be dealing with would be upper arm and shoulder. Can you believe it when your worried about defacing your body in hopes that it might not get in the way of getting hired by an airline someday. We all really must love to fly,

I'm only speculating, but I'm wondering if the reason the AME asks about the tattoos on the medical is in case you get into an accident and that would be one additional way to identify you. That's a conclusion I came to after mine asked me if I had any scars. Like I said, I'm only speculating on this one and I'm probably way off in left field.

As for the original question, as long as you can cover it up who cares, it's none of their business.

(This doesn't have anything to do with tattoes but I didn't feel like making a new thread about it) I got a question about earrings, Will I have to get rid of my ice to work for an airline??

I can buy that they would just want information for identification reasons. They never asked me when I got my physical.

I took out all my piercings so I could do this. Everything in my ears, lebret and lip. I didn't have any of them in any longer than 6-8 months because I didn't want holes when I went to interviews.

I wish I still had them in, but if you want to do this one I think you've gotta lose them.

ice....

I'd be careful with the gee you knit fiddy cent compton gangsta slang.

I guarantee you no senior person at any airline (IE captains that will be interviewing you) has a clue what "ice" is. "no thank you, i like my water with no ice"

just loookin out for ya, yo.

hell, i for the life of me couldn't figure it out...and i'm nothing close to "senior". maybe i need to watch more MTV and BET...or maybe not.

I know there was a post probably a year or two ago where tattoos were talked about.. and i remember some discussion that exposed tattoos are considered unprofessional and should not be shown at any time while on duty...

there are some airlines out there that do not allow long sleeved shirts to be worn at all during summer.. and some that allow it but only if you wear the full jacket etc...

for the most part, i can notice and see through some of doug's shirts - they're really not all that fabric heavy.. so i'd keep that in mind if you get something that's colored.. but whatever you do, make sure you stay safe and far away from any possible exposed area.

Yup, I had my ears streched with large guage plugs and took them out a year ago and they just now started to look normal again. However the full sleeve tattoo on my arm will not go away :( so I would have to sport the long sleeves if I make it to airline pilot status.

^^^ Yeah I know that, I'd never use slang when interviewing any job. Just wondering about the earrings though, its not a big deal if I gotta take them out!

I always wanted to do plugs but by the time I got around to gauging them out I had to take everything out. WHen I quit this job and go back to grad school, the first thing I'm doing is putting 4 gauge (fairly small) plugs in and getting my labret and lip pierced again.

I had 4s. Not to small, they leave a pretty visible hole for a long time. I accualy had to glue them when I interviewed for my current job. Yup it sounds weird but you would be surprised how many people with plugs do this. A lawyer friend of mine told me how to do it. Elmers glue and a Q-tip :)

If I remember right homie your 18 right? So go ahead and enjoy that "ice" but after you graduate college that "ice" is on life support at least while your working in aviation depending on what you choose to do professionally. But when your home and not working go ahead and rock the ice.

Good advice but not always true. Doug has mentioned from time to time that he has had the pleasure of meeting captains or f/o's that look ultra conservative or look like they would never listen to gangsta rap but are more knowledgeable on the subject then he is.

Its a brave new world out there...
