Pilots and Tattoos

Good advice but not always true. Doug has mentioned from time to time that he has had the pleasure of meeting captains or f/o's that look ultra conservative or look like they would never listen to gangsta rap but are more knowledgeable on the subject then he is.

Its a brave new world out there...

that's why the guys i fly with don't like me "running the radios" in the crew car...and yet i couldn't figure out "ice"...:whatever:

I would never hire someone with a tattoo, much like I would not date someone who had one -

The prove beyond a reasonable doubt you are DUMB!

4's are small? I kicked it with dudes that had 00's! Hardcore dudes.

The 4s I had were about the width of a pen. Those 00s are rediculous. One of my friends had them and took them out a few years ago and his ears look like they belong on an 85 year old man :(

Hey...I'm just saying that there is never a "formula" for figuring out a persons likes or dislikes based soley on appearance.

You've mentioned that before also in the context that you'd never date a girl with tatoo's. You might be a lil bias :sarcasm: . But in the interest of professionalism I'd say that if you couldn't seperate your bias you should never be directly involved with hiring/firing of employees.

I took out all my piercings so I could do this. Everything in my ears, lebret and lip. I didn't have any of them in any longer than 6-8 months because I didn't want holes when I went to interviews.

I wish I still had them in, but if you want to do this one I think you've gotta lose them.
It was a good move John.

When I was interviewing pilots in the "Shotgun" style interviews, we would talk to 30-35 pilots a day.

There would be 3 or 4 we would know "Yes Definitely Hire"

Conversely there would be 3 or 4 that were "No NEVER"

But then the HR agent would come in and say "OK give me 15 to send letters to."

It made me scramble. I would go over resumes and start eliminating people. I know I'm not the only one who would say, "Had a tattoo" or "had an earring" and throw it in the NO pile.

It's not that these things were important, but when you have to pare 30 down to 15, you look for anything. It is very hard to discern between what I called the "middle 80" - not the top 10% or not the bottom 10%

This is all in my book by the way.

^^^ Yeah I know that, I'd never use slang when interviewing any job. Just wondering about the earrings though, its not a big deal if I gotta take them out!

Sport'em until it gets around that time. You have plenty of time to grow out the corn rolls/dreads and do all the other stuff that you might want to do. Just know that you will, most likely, be networking on your way up and having all that might not be the most wise thing to do. Sadly even before you enter the industry you will be judged on how you look. Honestly, if people see you with corn rolls/dreads and ear rings.... you will, most likely, be stereotyped. So "playing the game" would probably make you a little better off in the long run.

As far the tattoos go.....I don't have any but....... would it sound too unreasonable to cover the tattoos up with some sort of make-up or something? I'm just curious.

my way of looking at that situation is just that i better make sure i stand out plenty enough to never end up in that middle 80.

right now i get some dirty looks around the airport at school, lip ring, ears at 2g (will take them out with plenty of time to heal up before job hunting), tattoo pretty big on one of my calves, various 'fashionable' hairstyles (arguable! haha), but in my opinion, • the squares who think that has any impact on the quality of my flying.

i bust my ass studying for lessons, have a blast flying, then go home and have a blast with my personal life as well.

im not giving up one for the other, but I have no problem putting on the right mask when the time calls for it.

on another note, times ARE slowly but surely changing. im not saying the general public would be okay with their airline type pilot having a face full of metal, but tattoos here and there are more and more accepted, barring the complete sleeves / face / etc etc.

and a personal note, i dont really see myself even WANTING the type of job where i come to work lockstep everyday and monkey around for the 'man'. just not my type of gig. theres plenty of other flying jobs out there besides the airlines. ill be taking a good look at ALL my options and the benefits, restrictions, and lifestyle changes they would each offer.

ever seen a girl who starts out the night at the bar with flawless skin, and ends the night looking like a pizza pocket?

At certain airlines the number of earrings is limited to two, one in each ear. The size and type is specified. Additionally, tatoos that are visible in uniform must be covered by a bandage such as a band aid. Jewelry is very limited and the type is very clearly described in the company regulations.

If you are looking for a job, you should remember that an interviewer is looking for reasons not to employ a candidate. You really shouldn't give them tatoos and holes as a reason to throw your application in the trash can.

This is the big time world and youthful expressions of individuality and creativity will be frowned upon. Airlines are looking for stability in a qualified candidate.

Sorry, growing up sucks, just ask all the baby boomers.

fall in line, conform, submit, obey.

theres plenty of safe and fun flying that can be done without resigning yourself to being a drone. only a matter of priorities and desires.

Thats true, but if it can get you through an interview and most of training....do what you got to do.

I agree with you though. Find the part of aviation that suites you. You might make the most money, but as long as you're happy with you, it's all good.

i suppose i never considered trying to conceal a whole tattoo with it... at most i have entertained the thought of putting just a dab of concealer or foundation or whatever the stuff girls cover zits with over the tiny tiny hole below my lip just to keep it from getting any redness or attention at an interview or whatnot.

i used to have my lip pierced on the other side as well, and even though i can tell there is a very small scar where it once was, no one i have mentioned it to has been able to spot the scar on their own, without me explicitly telling them thats what it is. at worst it looks like a single acne scar or just a larger pore or something. nice thing about most piercings. they DO heal up.

Nobody will notice the hold from the lip. That's something I realized AFTER I took it out. I had (have) really bad acne, and I've got a few scars on my face from it. I realized after I took out my lip and labret piercing that the holes look EXACTLY like a pimple scar, and somebody would have to know me from back in the day to know that I had a piercing in there and didn't just get a really bad zit.

Quality of flying is only the first attribute looked at in an interview. Attitude is probably most important.

Your post indicates an undesirable attitude for a CRM situation. Remember, the pilots interviewing you are asking two things:

1) Do I want to be on a 4 day trip (or a line all month) with this guy?

and

2) Would I feel safe putting my family on board an aircraft with this guy as captain?

There is a reason why people make a career out of tele-marketing.

I had a friend in college who did the cold calling thing for a while and she said 90% of her co-workers were the gothic/tattooed/pierced people that can't possibly get a job where they have to be seen.

It is fun to rebel and be a badass at times but when you sacrafice your future to be cool you just lost the game and your future.

...says the square who doesn't drink, isn't a party animal, and has no piercings or tattoos.

I've seen a lady pilot somewhere recently who had one on her upper back. Kinda saw it throught the pilot shirt/undershirt

That's why you get all tatted up AFTER your band goes platinum.
