Pilot Sidejobs or Business

Maniac - what kind of schedule was that captain able to hold when you flew with him?

I'm not sure what kind of schedule but he flew the line, at least 80 hours a month. And also I have my own company I developed. I am a broker for Part 135 companies.

I'd like to find someplace where I could have time for a side job. Hopefully when I finish off my bachelors I'll be able to find an airline down in the states where I can do my masters. Then maybe teach at the local college, and work at some airline doing mostly reserve stuff. I dunno.

I've had a part time job valeting cars for a while. It's great because you walk away with cash in your pocket. It's super easy, fun, and my schedule is really flexible. Plus, you get to drive some really cool cars.

I have a dj business on the side and dj locally at clubs and lounges. For that reason and babysitting issues, I choose Long call reserve so that I know for sure I'll have my weekends off.

I would go with bartending. Flexible schedule, cute girls, good money, and a couple of free drinks on the side. You can't be upset about that.

Ok, as stated, I was going to necropost in about a month. Sorry, these things take a while so it ended up being almost 3. But nevertheless, this is my newest side gig. I thought of it, patented it, developed it, manufactured it, and am now selling it. Hopefully it will take off.

ps, the site is still being worked on. Little things to be changed here and there.

Also, it hasn't been officially launched yet. By that I mean, all the advertising that will be done doesn't start until about May 3rd. It will be featured on flightaware, SkyWest Magazine, Google. Anyone got any suggestions on where else I should advertise?

In case you miss the other thread: skymall.com. Get them to sell your stuff via their catalog. You'll sell more through them than all those other places combined. You'll probably have to jack your direct sales price up quite a bit, tho.

Law isn't the profession it once was ... there are too many sub par law schools spitting out too many new attorneys. It's pretty difficult to find work as a new attorney these days. I have many attorney friends whose firms have been laying off in big numbers. People who think law school is an easy ticket to a $100k job should meet and speak with some new attorneys to get the real scoop. Of my wife's law school friends (Ohio State), the only ones bringing in that type of dough are working quite literally 80 hours a week.

Geez, that sounds like another profession we know a lot about...

Good job. Now, go make one for the Blackberry!

I trade stocks and equity options during my free time. Not enough to call it a second job but it pays for all my bills except my humpty diddle loan.

The only thing I don't like about that seatpod thing is what if the person in front puts their seat back. It renders it useless. I would maybe think about also offering some sort of stand that the iPhone can fit on when the tray table is lowered, like a big collapsible business card holder.

Anyway that's pretty neat, how did you go about designing, manufacturing, and shipping the product? Is it made in the US or another country?

I too trade options, on a good day, it is better than my (well paying) day job.

I did freelance IT consulting for about 5 years, billing about $150 an hour. Based on a 50 hour week, that isn't too shabby. Doing it full time for corporate America now.

Though I'd rather be flying, the pay and benefits from what I do are so much better than what I could ever expect from an airline, that I would be insane to give it up.

If I were to fly for my primary job, I would imagine I'd still be doing the consulting thing on the side.

A few off-topic questions: Getting my C-ASEL and C-AMEL this summer. Should I do the multi ride the same time as the commercial ride, or just do a multi add-on later?

Also, for the multi, what does it make the most sense to do it in? Cheapest I can find?

Negative ghostrider, the pattern is full. Reclining the seat does nothing to it. The weight of the phone keeps it hanging perfectly in position. At first I thought it would be effected. But it doesnt. It was a big relief.

I manufacture it in Costa Mesa, CA.

The stand already exist, they take up too much room, are like contraptions, and too much of a headache. This thing is silicone-rubber, and easy to use. Think of it as like a condom vs. a empty plastic water bottle. Both will do the trick, only one works best. Hahah. :)

My lawyer friend just got layed off(lol, sorry edited, its early) in Dubai. He did get $190,000AED as a severance package though. Which comes to $51,771US. He's going to use it all to get certified in the UK. It will pay for the course, room, and board.

I thought about it, however, the costs outweight the benefit. The problem with blackberry is most people use it as a business tool. Even though you can now watch movies, and almost do just about the same things on their as the iPhones, the numbers don't even come close. Steve Jobs has sold so many Apple products, and his marketing is so unbeleivable, that it blows away any competitor. I did a unscientific survey on flights that I went to the bathroom. On any given flight, 6% of the passengers are using an Apple product. Whether its an iPhone, iTouch, or iPod. 6%! That's huge!
