Pilot Refuses To Fly With Muslim Men On Board

Two Muslim men were removed from a Delta commuter flight operated by Atlantic Southeast Airlines Friday after the pilot refused to fly with them on board.
Masudur Rahman, an Arabic-language instructor at the University of Memphis and Mohamed Zaghloul, a religious leader in the Islamic Association of Greater Memphis told the AP they were removed from a flight leaving Memphis International Airport, heading for Charlotte, after the pilot refused to takeoff.
According to Charlotte-area station WBTV, the men have "retained counsel and the US attorney's office has already been contacted about the incident."
Rahman told the AP he "was dressed in traditional Indian clothing" and Zaghloul "was dressed in Arab garb, including traditional headgear" when they boarded the 8:40 AM flight to Charlotte.
The plane had left the gate and was headed for the runway when the pilot decided to turn back. Rahman said the pair were "ordered off by a Delta Supervisor." From WBTV:
"He said 'Mr. Rahman, sorry the pilot is not allowing you to enter the plane.' I said 'For what reason, TSA had a problem and we were cleared, we don't have anything and we are respected people in our community'." But, according to Rahman, the pilot said, "I'm not going to take to you."
"For what reason, he said some 'passengers might be upset or uncomfortable'," Raham said the pilot told him.
Rahman told the AP "Delta officials talked with the pilot for more than a half-hour, but he still refused."
Delta has referred questions about the flight to ASA, which did not return calls from either the AP or WBTV. Rahman told the wire service he understands what the strange travel diversion was about.
"It's racism and bias because of our religion and appearance and because of misinformation about our religion." Rahman told the AP. "If they understood Islam, they wouldn't do this."

Although I respect the Captain's authority to make such decisions, I think this was a bad one that shows that pilot's ignorance.

Fantastic :sarcasm:

Now we'll have two more hours of "But/For" refreshers in CQ in 2012.

There's two sides to every story, but if story A is correct...that captain needs to get over himself...

I feel like there ought to be more to that story. They were not allowed to board solely on attire and race? Really?

Do we have any ASA guys here with more info? Very curious as to more specifics about what happened...

Re: ASA removes 2 Muslim Imams from plane

Looks like we are still at it. This whole racial profiling thing has gotten out of hand.

I've dealt with a number of situations where people are uncomfortable for a number of reasons dealing with religion.

First and foremost, follow procedure because no matter what you feel about captains authority, if you fail o fully follow the airlines procedures, your ass is grass no matter if the FAA says captains have ultimate authority.

Remember, it's the airline's airplane and not the FAA's.

Besides, it's behavioral. 9/11 the hijackers were stealthy. They looked like normal Joe Schmoe business travelers so they would blend in so the mere idea that someone is going to pre-announce themselves by wearing religious attire and conduct an operation is silly.

Follow procedure. Use your noggin. And worse comes to worse, if it's that scary, go to TruckMasters.

Already a thread in progress on this topic.

According to the AJC.Com story (http://www.ajc.com/business/muslim-leaders-removed-from-938149.html:

Another passenger aboard the flight called the AJC Saturday and said the pilot told him a different story.

Sean McKinney, an accountant from Greeenville, S.C., said he spoke to the pilot after landing in Charlotte and the pilot told him that TSA requested the plane return to the terminal.

"That seems more reasonable to me," said McKinney, 38, who was traveling for business. "Why would the pilot pull away from the gate if he had a concern with the passengers?"

If we wanted to be really serious about "Airline/Airport Security", we'd adopt the Israeli style of profiling and questioning before you can get past security. While you might not agree with it, it gets the job done.

My dad was on a flight with OJ Simpson years ago, a female passenger boarded saw OJ annouced 'I would rather walk to Los Angeles than fly on a plane with a murderer' turn around and walked off the plane - good for her I say.

Even though he was acquitted?

Im curious how they were made uncomfortable with the dress. The 9/11 hijackers wore nothing that looked out of place.

We better start removing all the businessmen off the flights just to be sure.

What is there not to agree with? That style uses behavioral profiling, not racial profiling.
