Pilot Killed on 2nd Leg of Round the World Flight

Quite the career trajectory going from an Eagle driver to the BUFF.

I had an uncle that did something similar. Spent most of the 60s flying F4s in an attack squadron. He moved over to the BUFF in 1971ish for improved career advancement, unironically, and ended up commanding the first B52 shot down in LB2. I guess that era was a different time compared to the modern USAF though.

Strangely enough historically, bombers and bomber pilots were up until the Jet age considered the higher crop of aviator both in our Air Corps and especially in the Luftwaffe.

Bombers and the SAC mafia that came after were seen as your “war winner” where fighters were just this sort of necessary to keep the other guy from winning.
