John began ATP’s Private Pilot & Airline Career Pilot Programs on February 6, 2006, and then completed the Airline Transition Program. Pinnacle Airlines hired John 6 months after starting training with ATP. Total fixed cost for airline training program: $78,985.

78,985!!!!!!!

John Hollingsworth is gonna be ina world of hurt if he gets furloughed from 9E with a $78k tag for ATP!

If he can afford it... then he may not be...

I'd be more concerned about the guy or gal that has basic bills to pay to support his/her spouse and family, with a car loan or two, and a house payment, along with old college tuition bills and maybe some future ones coming up... combined with maybe a 20k-30k career loan and a promise to their spouse that this will all lead to a better life.

The single guy with a load of debt can get by on ramen and a different job for a while.

...and Max... lot's of JCr's work for 9E. Let's keep the doom and gloom to a minimum. ;)

No clue whether the guy I was talking about was an intern, an ATP grad or whatever. As for spending $80k, having low time, etc. I was working with a student in the CFI days (A guy late 40's--accomplished real estate investor, more money than he knew what to do with) and he just wanted to fly for an airline. He went to ATP--paid the $$$, got his hours, his three hours in the citation, and all his ratings and is now flying for ***MESA***!!!

Good for him I guess. He realized late in life that he'd spent 20 years working at something he could care less about, and his dream was and always has been flying. To some 80k is no big deal, to others---they'll be paying their loans off to the day they die. I agree with DE727.... we all want to think that OUR way was the best. Probably just so we don't feel like WE got ripped off!

What's the best way to learn a foreign language? Taking classes over several years while still having other things in life get in the way? (that soooo didn't work for me and my spanish!) ;) Or Immersing yourself in the culture 24/7? Is that cramming?

No, it is not craming, In my opinion. I am immersing myself in full Eglish environment. Now, at least I can talk to "ATC" :) I think it is great idea.

About 9E hires 8 out 11 ATP guys, it is good for them. Like someelse said, they still need to know how to read Jepp charts, flying the sim, pass written to get on with 9E. Nothing more, nothing less.

There is a fine line where being immersed turns to drowning. Haven't drowned yet but I have drank a lot of water.

You'll learn a lot at ATP. But in the grand scheme of things, you won't learn very much. I think the real knowledge kicks in when you teach aviation.

As far as that dude, I hope he didn't take out a loan. My loan is not as high as his, but let me tell you, sleepless nights over the bank man chasing me are rather common, especially when you look at pay scales.

Its like that Country song, "What was I thinking!!" :cwm27:

if you pay for a useless sic right seat warmer type in an rj, you might be a tool...
hey, capn bob, are you one of those mid-30s career changing types that atp loves so much?

Hey there Vlad,

There are no "Types" given out at ATP. Sooooo, I guess those guys aren't tools after all. Thanks for clarifying that.

As for me... I'm a mid-30's career changing type that ANY flight school would have loved to get their hands on... I chose ATP. Got my Private in Maine and trained & flew FBO style for 2 years prior to chooseing where I would go get my advanced ratings.

There are a hellava lot of people at MIT, Stanford, and Duke that can do some amazing things with skateboards and they got over a 1550's on their SAT's the first time.

Well I haven't seen any people here that fit that description - most of the people I have seen on bicycles on campus, look like they only just mastered riding them. But when it comes to every function on your TI-86, or the Dewey Decimal system we are the best.

121 will get old pretty soon though, and they'll be looking somewhere else for a fast track

Reads all of Bob's posts

Back in my day.......

Maybe someday when it's really Capt Bob and not F/O Bob, you'll see what I mean....

I guess I would fit that type too. Well... EARLY 30's.

Didn't go to ATP though. Honestly, I don't have any problems with the school itself, but I don't like the idea of those high priced programs designed to get around flight instructing. Personally, I went the instructing route and got offered the PCL september class date less than a year after starting as a CFI. Much better from a financial perspective, as all my training specific loans are paid off.

No doom & gloom scenario. I wasn't talking about NWA's current situation with empending CHAOS. I was just being general and making reference to the unstability of the airline industry and the fact that anyone can and could be furloughed at any point or for any reason. And how that'd suck with a $78k loan to pay off.

No offense meant to any Flagship drivers...

One of those guys was an instructor at GKY. I ended up at SEP with him and one of his students eating some BBQ once. Nice guy!

Not really that funny there guy. Seriously you should stick with your day job, comedy isn't your gig.

To-may-toe / Toe-mah-toe... You think of it as a CRAM session whereas others look at it as an "immersion" program.

I kinda gotta agree that ATP's programs are a little fast for me personally. I did ATP CFI school but attended another large flight academy for my other ratings. I was very well prepared for ATP and the FAA knew it. It was without question my prior training. The inspector commented saying that I must have had training elsewhere.

Anyways, I also felt the ATP 90 guys and CFIs were a little less detailed in their knowledge base than a few of the other guys that came from schools like Pan Am where they have a very rigours program with somewhat of an academic standard.

then get back to me about 121 flying and how someone is smart to have dropped a cool 90 g's to get here faster
