Passenger attempts to blow up Northwest Airlines flight..

Re: Passenger lights firecrackers as Northwest Airlines flig

While I certainly applaud the tenacity some users have for defending fellow air travelers, I urge caution..

.. you're not Law Enforcement Officers. Defending your need to kill someone in self defense or defense of others usually requires imminent threat.

If you've subdued the threat, you might want to let the crew take over from there.

Now, if you just so happen to use maximum force to subdue that threat and something damaging or fatal should happen to the suspect, I think you might consider the possibility that you were wrong.

Perhaps the situation at hand makes it very clear what the intent of the suspect is.. all the same.. unless absolutely necessary for survival.. please don't kill him/her.

Subdue them, thwart their efforts, and turn them over to the authorities.

They do make such excellent intelligence assets.
I assure you that having come so close to the glory of martydom and fallen short (thereby being left to rot in a cell) makes for a humbling moment. No virgins for you, fella!

Contrary to public opinion, such suspects do not lead enviable lives.. and the intelligence gained from them may in fact prevent future attacks.

Just a thought.

Re: Passenger attempts to blow up Northwest Airlines flight.

My very, very limited experience with violent confrontation suggests that while people talk a lot of hardassery eg. "I'd kill every one of them", A) Modern, civilized (or what passes for it) humans are hesitant to inflict maximum damage on another human being, however provoked and B) People are a lot harder to kill with your bare hands than you think they are.

As for the cartoonish, inefficiect, impotent Big Brotherishness...is anyone really surprised? It's not like this is the first time.

Re: Passenger attempts to blow up Northwest Airlines flight.

I would just get like 3 people to sit on the guy so he couldn't go anywhere and wait for him to be handcuffed. Let him rot in that supermax prison in COlorado where the shoe bomber is. That's worse than death.

Re: Passenger attempts to blow up Northwest Airlines flight.

I've seen this stuff going around the interwebs all day about the new TSA rules that are supposedly effective immediately... but my company has mentioned nothing at all.

Re: Final Hour of Flight Rule...TSA

The only reference I've seen is a New York Times article, nothing more.

I wouldn't loose any hair or risk a weekend or irritable bowel syndrome over it yet.

I have some friends coming back from Munich and London, and they said that flights were crazy delayed because at checkin people were only allowed one carryon...some people were getting flack for bringing bulky jackets through security. I'll say it again, in the name of security we are all suffering for nothing more than a smoke screen of effectiveness. Everyone on here (or mostly everyone) works at airports, and I have too...you know the lapses that go on everyday, unnoticed by thousands of people. Maybe we should start there instead of saying it will now be illegal to read your skymall magazine 59 minutes before touchdown.

From AirCanada.com
"New rules imposed by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration also limit on-board activities by customers and crew in U.S. airspace that may adversely impact on-board service. Among other things, during the final hour of flight customers must remain seated, will not be allowed to access carry-on baggage, or have personal belongings or other items on their laps."

Re: Final Hour of Flight Rule...TSA

In my opinion, realistically, if one person has a SIDA badge that allows them to bypass security, the entire system is compromised. Now, we know that they'll never be able to do away with that (I hope), but it's just something to think about.

Can you stop trying to interject logic? We're having a viscous thread about our emotions and logic doesnt play into that!

"Taking a trick from the narcotics trade - which has long smuggled drugs in body cavities - Asieri had a pound of high explosives, plus a detonator inserted in his rectum."

Well now we will really be in trouble, if rectum searches become part of the TSA's security screening, I am moving to the moon.

Damn, the guy liked a big load in the rear or what? Even more so, he liked it hot!

Who says you can't be logical AND passionate?

The thought of long, tedious interrogations of an almost self-martyring terrorist gives me a big rubbery one.

Sweat it out under the lights, pal. I hope this loser gets to eat the special sandwich they used to serve at Guantanamo. :D

Re: Passenger attempts to blow up Northwest Airlines flight.

I hope he gets to eat their special sandwich too...I just want to be able to read my book and or access my hand luggage while on board an airplane.

Re: Passenger attempts to blow up Northwest Airlines flight.

GA is starting to make more and more sense everyday with all this crap that will keep being imposed and never go away.

Lulz... you think GA is safe from the TSA?

On another note:

Here's the PDF of the complaint filed by the FBI.

Link from:

The complaint says the explosive contained PETN, and gives a few more details of what went down. (I'm not an expert, but they state that it's a high explosive)

Re: Passenger attempts to blow up Northwest Airlines flight.

My question is...a lot of the reports say that he used a syringe to mix this stuff. My mom is an insulin dependent diabetic. If she is not allowed to get up an hr before landing and has to give herself an insulin injection, will she be pummeled by a do-gooder who thinks she is a terrorist???

The Libertarian party looks more and more appealing.

Re: Passenger attempts to blow up Northwest Airlines flight.

So does ice fishing in Canada....permanently.

Re: Final Hour of Flight Rule...TSA

Uhm, did I miss something in the news reporting so far?!?!

Wasn't the TERRORIST sitting, and it's the Dutch guy who was the passenger who JUMPED over 3 seats to subdue him?

Therefore, logic would suggest, that passengers should be encouraged to wander about the cabin the last hour so they can check out the suspicious passengers and kick their butts.

Re: Passenger attempts to blow up Northwest Airlines flight.

So how do they know when there's 1 hour left in the flight? If the plane overshoots the destination by 150 miles, how am I supposed to know that I can use my personal devices for an extra 40 minutes?
