Passenger attempts to blow up Northwest Airlines flight..

Re: Passenger lights firecrackers as Northwest Airlines flig

Is this the same story as the guy trying to light "white powder" that the news reported the other day or is this the 2nd incident in the last few days???

Re: Passenger lights firecrackers as Northwest Airlines flig

ah disregard my last post....looks ilke it was still the same incident

Re: Passenger lights firecrackers as Northwest Airlines flig

Heck, I have links to Al Qaeda. Anyone ever see that six degrees of separation? .

Careful what you say, I'm sure the guberment is watching you post now!

Down in the lobby while eating bfast i saw the news talking about how the government ordered airline security to step it up. I honestly don't know what more can be done or implimented now than just not allowing carry-on bags. I could see them saying that pax will only be allowed a clear, quart size freezer bag only for essential items. Anyone remember back a handful of years ago when there was a whole lot of talk with school security and kids started wearing clear backpacks? Anyone else thinking the same thing for the airlines now?

Where is Clint Eastwood when we need him ?

I already posted this comment in the news bot section by mistake, but I figure there would be no harm repeating my 2 cents here.

Post 911, one of the few things that gave me some peace of mind anytime I was aboard a commercial flight was the assumption that somewhere amid the seated passengers, there was probably a sharp-shooting sky marshall with a Glock semi-auto, just waiting for someone to make his day in the cabin.

Hearing about those special ceramic rounds that are designed to fragment harmlessly against the fuselage while delivering equivalent knock-down energy to lead slugs was also reassuring, in that a clip or two could be emptied into would-be air pirates or terrorists, with minimal risk of de-pressurisation.

With those deterrents in mind, I am still baffled as to why this terrorist who so obviously tried his damndest to blow up this Delta aircraft was not culled by a marshall as soon as there was a safe line of fire. Surely this was a clear-cut case in which deadly force was justified, and with that done, investigations could still be pursued after the perp had been deep-sixed.

If such instant justice sounds extreme to some, it bears remembering that extremists worldwide NEED to be put on notice that any threats to passengers and aircraft will invite an instant, overwhelming and brutal response. [/ Rant over.]

How do you quickly and safely fire a weapon with 278 people in such a confined place? I've never been convinced that it's possible.

Re: Passenger lights firecrackers as Northwest Airlines flig

It would be a nerve-racking shot to take for anyone suddenly having to make that call, but, in that split second, the risk of not shooting would have to be weighed against the real possinility that the target is moments away from actuating a detonator.

There may or may not be an Air Marshal or other LEO onboard. It just depends.

Re: Passenger lights firecrackers as Northwest Airlines flig

I would gladly pay a fair bit more for my air tickets if that would help put some firepower on EVERY flight, or at least every translantic one.

Final Hour of Flight Rule...TSA

"New rules imposed by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration also limit on-board activities by customers and crew in U.S. airspace that may adversely impact on-board service. Among other things, during the final hour of flight customers must remain seated, will not be allowed to access carry-on baggage, or have personal belongings or other items on their laps."

Thoughts?...I've heard this is something being thrown around by the TSA in the wake of the firecracker guy...

Re: Final Hour of Flight Rule...TSA

How does this prevent you from lighting a device strapped to your junk?

So they either take whatever they need out earlier and hide it somewhere or don't follow the rule. A terrorist is not going to care what a FA says to them if they are intent on blowing up the plane. Really, this will only inconvience the law abiding passengers.

Re: Final Hour of Flight Rule...TSA

You know....rules like this really start to make you wonder though. I won't subscribe to the idea that movies like V for Vendetta and that sort of thing are playing themselves out today. However, this sort of totalitarian regime crap that the TSA seems to think is ok to impose on law abiding citizens in the name of "security" is ridiculous. This rule does NOTHING but make our travel experiences that much more pitiful and annoying. It has nothing to do with security, and everything to do with knee jerk reactions to make Joe-public think he is safe when he travels once a year. Maybe next time I go visit my family in Europe, I'll ship myself via UPS or Fed Ex, it might be more comfortable in a box in some cargo hold on an MD-11F....:(

Re: Final Hour of Flight Rule...TSA

Please tell me that I will be arrested by US Customs when I refuse to put Skymall into the seat back pocket, or I fall asleep with my ipod on and we are 59 minutes away from landing....??

But c'mon.....the people will feel safe with this window-dressing. They need that from their government.

And the government needs to look like they're doing something.

Re: Final Hour of Flight Rule...TSA

It's times like these where I really wonder if I should go live in a fjord in Scandinavia or go become a beer brewer in Bavaria....When I start to feel like someone who has committed a crime in my own country, I think that is a problem, no?

Re: Passenger lights firecrackers as Northwest Airlines flig

I'd want to blow up the airplane too if I knew I was going to Detroit.

Re: Passenger lights firecrackers as Northwest Airlines flig

The folks on the Saab had to sit in there for 2+ hrs after landing.

Customs/TSA were just doing their part to try to get the .gov their $27,000 per passenger. :)
