PacNW "Bomb Cyclone" 2024

Oh just missed you (well not really, I'm sure you weren't there).....was in Lemoore getting drowned for the last time ever in their survival pool last week

Whidbey doesn’t have one? If not, can’t go use the one at Fairchild?

Yes, they do. But I'm not trying to get drowned as hard as they drown you here. Was kinda neat as a 20-something midshipman, or even as a late 30's LCDR, but CDR ///AMG doesn't need to be flailing that hard in 50 lbs of misfitting gear anymore, for his last ever ride :)

Lemoore does it differently?

Yeah their pool flow is somewhat different. Both places you have to do the manual inflation of your LPU under duress. In Whidbey they do it at the end of a 100m full gear survival swim, while in Lemoore they do it at the conclusion of your second (blindfolded) helo dunker dive. I don't know which one is actually better, but I found the latter to be less breathless. They do all of the same events, it is just organized slightly differently. I don't think there is actually a real difference, I just wanted to smell cow farts and tour endless farmlands

Interesting. I’d always thought they were all the same within the same service’s various locations..

That is generally correct. You complete all the same events, they are just apparently in a slightly different order depending on location. In CA, you still do the 100m gear swim, but at the end it is just over. In WA, you do the two dunker rides but they are just over after that. I think there were a couple other small differences, but it is very much nuance. Either way, I've now done it for the last time

Whidbey was my last ride. Lol

Just got my power back.

The difference between the hardest hit areas and everywhere else is wild. Our kid’s coach was pissed we missed three days of practice because their “power just flickered on and off once”. Meanwhile the streets are still covered in debris and downed power lines all over town here.

Damn that's wild, as you say. It didn't end up getting as bad here as forecast, but there were still sustained winds in the tree-dropping/large scale power outage realm for a number of hours. Up here, we've had really good luck over the last couple-three years. But I have a suspicion that there is more proactive tree trimming going on from the utilities company in town. I'm not sure what is going on down there, but the south end always seems to end up being a disaster while we up on the north end of the island generally do ok.

Finally done with reserve for a while. Hit the gym at 7AM and now I’m trying to reopen my trails. I’ve got a long way to go. It’s like this for 2-3 miles of jump lines and my climbing trails.

Once I get all the cuts done I’ll have to go back through the trails, buck all the logs and rake out all the smaller debris. Probably a month or so worth of work here to get things going again.

The night of the storm was so gnarly. So many trees were falling I could hear it all night cracking and smashing. Some impacts I could even feel vibrating the ground while I was in my house. 😳

I was trying to add txt but I fat fingered it on my phone at the EWR hotel bar. The power came on around Friday. I wasn’t home though. Got the txts from PSE.

I have a pretty nice generator set up that runs on propane. 10/10 would recommend.

The local trails are trashed. I’ve been sawing and bucking for 5 days and I’ve barely made a dent. The local advocacy group can’t handle it and there is talk of bringing in DNR to handle the massive trees down that no one else can clear. Even then the trails may have to be rerouted around some of the deadfall.

I’ve got at least a month of work to get my trails running again and I’m giving back about 25% to nature since it’s outside of my skill set to safely manage.

Look at all that dead and down, understory and slash. Sheesh, that area needs some thinning and a controlled burn. Hate to see what that becomes come summer.

It's an older clear cut area that didn't get any management, as far as I can tell. It's such an unhealthy forest. Prime for building sick jumps though. No one cares what goes on back there.
