Pilot finds hole in plane's fuselage; airline and FBI investigate

(CNN) -- A US Airways 737 pilot in Charlotte, North Carolina, discovered a small hole in the exterior of his plane's fuselage Monday, prompting the airline to take the plane out of service and for the FBI to begin an investigation.

"During a pre-flight inspection, one of our captains noticed a small hole in the fuselage," said US Airways spokeswoman Valerie Wunder.

"Safety is paramount, so we took that aircraft out of service and our maintenance team is investigating," she said.

Wunder said that she had not seen the aircraft and could not characterize the size or shape of the hole, but said it was towards the rear of the aircraft.

Amy Thorseson, spokeswoman for the FBI in Charlotte, confirmed that the federal agency had an evidence team at the scene, but it was not immediately known what caused the hole in the plane.

The plane -- a 737-400 designated as flight 1161 from Philadelphia -- landed without incident at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport at about 4 p.m.

The plane holds 144 passengers, according to the US Airways website.

It was not immediately known how many people were aboard the aircraft, but all of the passengers were accommodated on other flights, according to a US Airways spokeswoman.

In order to prevent holes in airplanes the FAA is requiring pilots to call the tower before and after every pre-flight.

Would anyone be shocked?

At ERAU-PRC, all the darned time! :) Someone even drew AAA batteries on the practice area charts.

Someone shot one of our planes in ATL once, that was interesting when you hear the backstory.

Often! Lots 'o bored, idiotic people out there.

I had a police helicopter tell me he was being shot at one night, he told me he was going to turn off his collision lights, it was slow and in the Class B but I made abroadcast on the frequency and notified the adjacent facilities

There were places at ERAU-DAB that had similar warnings posted.
Some local people near the practice areas apparently didnt like airplanes flying around.

Serious question, would you even hear bullets hitting the? Would it sound like ice being slung off the blades and hiting the nose?

Depends on the calibre and where they hit. Small arms you may or may not hear, depending. 12.7mm and up, you will. 85mm and up, you might not ever know if you heard it or not.

The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Dept MD-500 was shot down over Albuquerque by small arms fire back in Aug 2005.

A pilot found something wrong on a preflight and this was newsworthy enough to bring out the news choppers? My money says it got hit by some kind of ground equipment and either the person didn't notice or just didn't bother telling anyone.

"I swear, it hit the aircraft right on the tailskid and took all of the paint off and scraped a good bit of metal off! It was NOT because I raised the flaps in the flare and over pitched the aircraft during the flare, DERP!" :)

Before my sim session yesterday the instructor told us that they found an arrow in the bottom of a Embraer some time back..... a fricking arrow!!!!!

They come from the factory that way! How many holes do you s'pose one of these things picks up on a train ride from Wichita to Renton? Nothing but guns, yokels, and Mormons for the whole in-between... :)

A 30mm round went through the bottom of my cockpit once and it made a very alarming sound. Had 7.62 rounds go through the back and no one noticed until the post flight.
