Ok, this is funny! Drunk pax fights a pilot in the terminal.

I agree that while I try to stay as far away from the gate as possible, it doesn't always work. That said, I've never had that level of drawn out confrontation with a passenger. My only experience with any level of violence in this job (directed at me or my crew... I have seen two awesome drunken Jerry Springer style jetway brawls) happened so quickly that there was no level of escalation. One second I was standing in the doorway saying good bye to the passengers and the next second some drunk dude was throwing a punch at my FA who was standing next to me. It ended up working out (the guy ended up with a broken nose and arm after he took a tumble down the RJ stairs) but the speed at which the situation occurred really shocks me.

The captain did a pretty bad job of diffusing (or even better, walking away) from this situation.

At my airline, they want us to, well optionally, "engage the customers" during delays and irregular operations.

Not out of the realm of reality. I mean, there are those that would rob a KMart with an AK-47.....:)

That was funny then, and is even more funny now 25 years later brother, if just for the stereotype officer! How pissed off you were when you returned to the apartment after that traffic stop by Chino Valley PD. :) I don't even remember what you were originally stopped for. 36 in a 35 zone probably, and a black guy in a Beretta....

Kind of why I think it's hilarious when people get all bent out of shape when they're hassled by the police or think they're under surveillance. HELLO!? Entire subcultures of people have been hassled and under surveillance for generations, but since someone might have peeked at your publicly-available Facebook page I'm supposed to light my hair on fire and scream "REVOLUTION!!!!!"

Ooh! Where can I find a bean tostada at 0710 in The Netherlands? That sounds delicious.

I know, personally, someone who got in a fight with his captain, on the ramp.

And that was the end of their careers.

Worth it? Doubt it.
 
I want to see an big group of airline pilots, mechanics, cattle-cargo passengers, and airline management all get together and settle their never ending disputes once and for all.... in an epic... no holds barred... not rated for TV... winner takes all:

So what do you do if they're verbally assaulting one of your FAs ... particularly a female? I have a hard time even as a passenger not stepping up to defend a female FA getting an unnecessary earful from some jag off. Would be harder to just wait for security for me - particularly if you think it has the threat of becoming physical.

There are some basic psychological methods to de-escalating aggressive people. Some of the best bouncers and security (real, not mall cops) never have to lay a finger on people. They form a non-aggressive partnership with the aggressor or give them face saving ways to "win" without any further escalation, and can then lead them down and away from the situation. Of course, being cool and calm enough to do that often comes with knowing that you can physically control and stop that person easily if needed (which comes from skill and training in combatives).

I would think airlines would advocate exactly what Derg says he does. Call security immediately. Let them do their job so you can do yours. One thing I know about fighting is that any physical altercation can escalate in extreme and unpredicted ways... so do whatever you can to avoid the physical and if you need to resort to it, it needs to be all in to stop the threat quickly, and that means people are going to get hurt and there will be a serious legal battle that results. You dont want that unless you really feel someone's safety is in serious imminent danger.
