Oh regional pilots....

A captain at my regional airline I work for Always has a bluetooth in his ear. He looks ridiculous. Just sayin'

I've flown with guys who used backpacks. Their professionalism couldn't be carried by a forklift by some here.

My father is one of the most professional pilots I've ever met. He sports a backpack.

Do they make backpacks designed for aviation?

Beats me. Does it have to be "designed for aviation" to get the "a'ok?"

I could see using one when you're on the telephone, but to keep that thing planted in your ear is just freaky.

A few years ago there was a guy with a bluetooth in his ear on the terminal train in ATL yammering away. Then in the middle of his sentence to whomever he was speaking with he says "Douglas what gate is XYZ".

I didn't even hear him and he says "DOUGLAS, what gate is XYZ?!"

I didn't even acknowledge the guy. It just seemed weird, awkward and kind of rude to expect that I should be standing at attention waiting for my name to be called when he's having a bluetooth conversation about Frosted Cocoa Puffs or TPS reports.

Besides, I didn't know where the damned gate was.

One of the last days I wore a name tag before getting tired of strangers assuming familiarity and addressing me by my first name. I'm a weirdo.

Douglas, where's my donut?

See, that's cool because we're somewhat familiar. However when your first communication with me is "Hey Douglas, where is baggage claim?" I presume a stranger is talking to someone else because it's a common name and I'll probably ignore you by default.

"Pardon me, Doug? blah blah blah" and my ears will generally open because you're acknowledging that I'm being addressing someone unfamiliar.

Yeh, I totally get ya.. I love it when people ask me "do you work here?"

"Beacon's not on and the door is probably open on my jet a few terminals away.... so technically... not right now!" :)

I listen to my ipod when I preflight. Then again I'm not at an airline, but I don't see whats wrong with listening to music when you're stuck in a terminal not getting paid.

Chasen, can't you go five minutes without Hanna Montana and just preflight the damned airplane? :) :sarcasm:

Yeesh,

This is why I love our "Uniforms"

Almost forgot the other essential uniform item for any Canadian ATC'er:

Thats what happens when you put yourself out there on the web. You'll get attention, both wanted and unwanted.

You must also know where all restrooms in the terminal are.

Hat/no hat, backpack, leather jacket/blazer, just follow your companies FOM. You knew when you signed up what the policy was. My real point is who the heck still rocks a goatee? The '90s are over.

If I could get Hanna Montana into a syringe, I could probably go without the ipod on the preflight and be good to go. Until then, I demand the best of both worlds.
