It is so sad when a profession's pretend uniforms aren't worn to their pretend standards.
 
How do you know he was a regional pilot? Maybe he just bought a uniform to walk around the airport and pick up chicks. :dunno:
 
Just curious. Whats wrong with a backpack? Earbuds, spiked hair, sun glasses, I get it. But a backpack? Whats the rub?
 
I'm flying a trip with a flight attendant who always has her earphones in. It looks very unprofessional but I don't think I'm in the right spot to be enforcing uniform standards. The dryer at home broke so my good shirts weren't dry when it was time to leave the house. I had to go with the backup to the backup to the backup shirts that I've had since IOE.
 
20K first year regional pay..... you tend to get what you pay for. Same reason I try not to get upset at the ground crews moving sllloooowwwly as I know they make $8/hr endouring the 100+ degree weather in Texas.

I will defend the Top Gun music as a ring tone though. Very classy.

It's not so much the loss of the hat and the jacket, I think, so much as the cultural shift that allowed them to become secondary items. Overall, I'd say the continued dismal treatment of pilots by management groups along with longer hours, lower pay, and lower overall job satisfaction make it that much harder to keep the extra spit and polish going on. Self-respect is inherent to the individual, sure, but respect of a public image of a company, uniform, etc, would seem to be largely a product of the corporate influence.

I've seen it real time in the real world. People will rise or sink to the expectations placed upon them by their superiors... and you definitely can't tank the individuals on that.

Not to mention- I once worked with a fellow FO that literally looked like he'd slept in his uniform, bedhead and all. I was going to take him to task for it, but was told that that was a Captain's business, not mine. And yet... no Captains stepped up to do it. If we're really going to police ourselves, we have to be consistent. Otherwise this is all just a bunch of hot air where people who put extra starch in their shirts go looking for a way to make that more important by looking down on those who don't.

meh..... if you hang out enough at the airport you'll find that the "offenders" are split about 50/50. Usually its the 48 year old fat dude who just discoved what an ipod is who has the sloppy cool dood look.

So am I. Honestly, I don't understand why so many people hate the leather jackets. I don't work for an airline, nor do I wear one personally, but I think they look professional.
 
To be honest, after carrying my briefcase for the first few weeks back at Horizon...I noticed I can't get all the stuff I need in it, and it's a pain to carry when I go out on roadtrips/hiking/etc. So I went back to my backpack that I can carry everything I need, esp for when my rollerbag gets stuck up front (where I can't get to it) or in the belly (where I really can't get to it).

Pick on me if you want, but right now it's all about what gets the job done, SON!

I'm actually lucky that most of my flying jobs have allowed me to wear facial hair. The only one that didn't was the one that made me goose step around in a stupid blazer. ;)

Chick's dig the blazer mang... ;)

We have this awesome neoprene jacket that we can wear as our uniform jacket, but the FOM says you've gotta have your hat to wear it...stupid rules! Jacket is lighter/easier packed than the blazer or leather, it's fleece lined and water proof...so I guess I'm stuck with the stupid hat from here on out.
