Oh Delta XXVIII

I’d love for there not to be a mandate, but it’s time to end this stuff. For the people who have LEGITIMATE reasons not to get vaccinated, I understand the hesitation. But most of the hold outs are just being children. Just like when a kid acts up in class, it sucks to disrupt his education and pull him out of class, but when it’s impacting the health, wellbeing, and prosperity of everyone else, it’s time to leave that kid behind.
I completely agree. Despite certain people claiming to understand what I was saying, the point I was trying to make is that Delta has done a great job of getting their people to do something because they should do it, not because they must. That being said, 100% vaccination is obviously the goal so I hope their plan gets them there.

Money talks and employee turnover is expensive. Especially at the lower end of the payscale where most of the turnover is going to come from and where they will have the hardest time rehiring folks.

I know a guy whose wife is high level lawyer for a big pharma company. He's not gotten the vaccine and his wife has no issues with that, of course he's now a retired haus frau that lives a gilded life based on her income. It's an odd world we live in.

So what you’re saying is that your friend has voluntarily left the workforce because the compensation isn’t sufficient.

Interesting.

You never get full vax rates on people on a national level, and to pretend otherwise is nonsense. When I was a kid, the county in Mass I lived in had something close to a 10% unvaxxed rate of kids in public school, mostly unwashed granola cruncher kids but some religious (that which remains in Mass). Statistically speaking the kids would get up to high school and they'd have a vax or two more- as their parents grew up and joined reality. Somehow the world kept spinning. IF you get bored look at CA in about 2015, their unvaxxed rates were so high in public schools they "cracked down" on religious exemptions from Mother Gia and whatever the Jedi Temple told the unwashed. Some of us were having our first kid back then and were warned by the doctors to get everyone around our kids vaccinated because of flareups of all sorts of infant killing viruses. I did the flu shot every year, my daughter and I get them together for free these days. This has always been your world.

/story time, get on grandpa's knee
Guy in my dad's retirement community wouldn't get the vax. Would tell anyone that would listen why not, and he was a "kook". Died of whatever the hell kidney failure is called, wanna know why? He didn't want to go to dialysis either. Obviously if he'd died of Covid people here and online would be jerking off to his death. Ultimately though, he was just an old man that wanted to die, and tell people he was brave and that big pharma was bad and not to trust the *blankity blank blanks*. People wanna die, or get it and get it done with and take their chances. If right now, everyone swallowed enough bullets or pills that wanted to die, the hospitals would fill up and people wouldn't get care. Also, that's what rural areas call friday night when one or two car accidents happen at once BEFORE the guy has a heart attack and has to be driven the 30 miles (which is 95 minutes because you can't get there from here) and dies on the way.
/end

Covid isn't going away, which it feels like I've said that forever now. You've listened to the media, you've listened to smug glib •heads on here tell you this can be eradicated like -whatever, name the disease- but it isn't. It's here, it's going to mutate, the booster will be incorporated in the flu shot at some point, just wait. How much you wanna chase Covid around? Let the companies do what they're going to do, worrying about it ain't going to change it. Good news is, kids are ok. Bad news? Old people die. There isn't a whole lot more that can be learned other than that on a pilot web board.

Couple years, there'll be a book explaining what happened. If you really care, wait for the book. Stop attacking the other team for a while, you'll find out nothing really changes. Now if you get through that experiment, and you think to yourself, but I really like the attacking the other team part Covid is just an excuse- then baby, I ain't here to shame your kink! Get off to it, attack that bad team! You're the good team, the morally pure team!

People forget the anti-vaxx thing was a thing before the apocalypse. There were already loons out there, and essentially eradicated diseases were making news because, well, they'd been almost eradicated, but they're back. Measles, media stars and religious kooks, I'm looking at you.

What's going on now isn't anti-vaxx, it's pure f' you politics. Trump et al didn't start it, but simply focused it.

20 years ago, maybe even 10, this would have been a shrug it off event.

For many of us who've had the vax for a while now, it is a shrug off event.

I don't know about trump starting it, a lot of kooks on here were happily doubting the science because Trump had his dirty fingers in the vials. Two people you might recognize in politics today were suspicious of the vax, live on TV, because that's what the base wanted to hear (and then forget as soon as Biden won). Trump has even tried pushing the vax at his campaign events and got boo'ed. Once he gets boo'ed at a campaign event, he's going to move on. For those of you old enough to remember that's how we got the Colin Kapernick concentrated hate from Trumpicans. Trump was getting boo'ed off the stage in Alabama after trying to push his guy, Luther Strange, when the state clearly liked their child rapist Roy Moore more. He stopped talking about Luther Strange and started in on the NFL and found a gold mine of hatred for the NFL and kneeling, which got the crowd off his back for thinking something different than them.

Lunatic base drives this nonsense, not the puppets in office. The only difference is, most of America has mentally disconnected with politics so the lunatics on either end drive the discussions on their own and when they get caught in a narrative contradiction, they pretend it doesn't happen.

What’s odd is you guys act like this is all confined to the US or something.
I do? What do you wanna bet I say something in 2016 on this site saying Trump is European politics come to America? Because I heard it and then copied it from a guest on HBO and it made a lot of sense.

It's true. As I've said before, Trump is basically the American Viktor Orbán.

Interestingly, one of the complaints right-wingers have about "Biden's America" is that our military recruitment ads aren't similar enough to China and Russia's. Less than a Decade ago Republicans warned that Democrats were ushering in "European socialism" and that Obama was ending American Exceptionalism. But today it's clear that Democrats are the party of American Exceptionalism and Republicans are the party of Orbánist Nationalism.

There have definitely been anti-vax cranks for a while. Before the Pandemic I thought they were a small number of harmless crackpots who didn't pose much threat to society at large. I was definitely wrong about that.

I remember about 2 decades ago a childhood friend of my sister's had contracted and survived Measles, as her parents were anti-vaccine. They were nice people but had some pretty nutty beliefs, for instance her father believed some conspiracy theory about the government controlling the weather. He also thought the Bush Administration was planning to invade Syria.

Yes, while it's true that anti-vaxx sentiment is a global phenomenon, the U.S.A. now has lower Covid vaccination rates than most developed countries, largely because of the partisan asymmetry in vaccine uptake. Once Trump lost reelection, Republican politicians and conservative media outlets went all in on the anti-vaxx stuff, hoping to do what they could to reduce vaccine uptake and thereby prolong the Pandemic, so they could blame Democrats for it the next few election cycles. And while it has certainly lead to thousands of unnecessary Covid deaths it appears to be an effective strategy: 2022 looks like it's shaping up to be a record Republican wave year, as does 2021: Republicans look set to easily pick up the Virginia and New Jersey Governorships in just a week.

I do wonder how this might have turned out if Trump had been reelected, since Republicans wouldn't have had the incentive to reduce vaccine uptake for political gain. I don't think Democrats are bold enough to use the same strategy, and they also don't have the propaganda machine necessary to execute it.

Repubs are going to win 2022 because certain Dimwits are doing everything they can to keep America locked up in fear about Covid. They will lose in this, badly. Let alone inflation, cost of goods and services going way up. Plus the general tradition the incumbent party loses in the midterm. The biggest one this time is the Covid fear porn. It just won’t end.

What are you talking about? Who's "locked up"?

Travel restrictions. Masks required.

As far as I'm concerned, that's locked up.

Just open it all. NO restrictions, no masks.

Jan 2021, Biden asked for 100 days of masking. Today, the fed mask mandate has been extended through Jan 2022. And how much you want to wager this will be extended even more?

How does wearing a mask equate to being locked down? The last time I checked, most of the major airports in the US are packed full and most international travel restrictions have been lifted. Sporting arenas and concert venues are at full capacity and the economy is humming along. Demand is so high that production, transport, and infrastructure can't keep up with it.

So again. What are you talking about?

I didn't say locked down. That was last year. Now we're locked up - as in locked up in the fear and hysteria.

As for your travel numbers, yeah they're up compared to 2020 but still well off 2019 numbers.

Can I enter from Mexico back into the United States without having to show a negative Covid test? Because that new rule made in January led me to cancel my spring break plan to Cancun with the family.

I still have to fill out a travel.hawaii.gov form online and then get a wrist bracelet to wear every time I go into Hawaii.

All this crap needs to stop.

And, at least in LA county, I have to wear a mask literally anywhere I go that isn't outside.

You're are just looking for something to be up in arms about.

You're are just looking for something to be up in arms about.

You asked me, and I literally answered your question. But that’s a good one, I’ll use that in the future. Anytime someone on your side says something, the reply will be “you’re just looking for something to be up in arms about.”

There’s a reason why travel is still down, there’s a reason people like myself and slumdog aren’t traveling like we’d like to. There’s a reason why most of America isn’t back in the office (and only so many jobs are actually ones that can be done from home long term).
