Oh Delta...why oh why?

Holding short of 23R in RDU waiting for Departure.

Delta: "Delta 123 Visual 23R"

RDU Tower: "Delta 123 cleared to land"

Delta: "Delta 123 cleared to land, can you turn up the lights please?"

(It was 17:37 local)

RDU Tower: "Ahhhh, OK"

Delta: "Yep, we are doing a practice CAT III Autoland and want the lights up."

Me (thinking to myself): WHAT IN THE BLOODY HELL

They were in a 737-800 and I know at my place you can do a CAT III Autoland any time even during the day with no lights on. Why, if you are doing a practice CAT III Autoland, do you need the lights? What is the policy at your place @Kingairer ? What is it like at the airline formerly known as AirTran @ATN_Pilot ?

I don't have a problem with it. Any port in a storm. Good judgement by the crew in my impaired predicament.

@Seggy

Per the FM, we don't need the lights, just have to fill out a crap ton of "reports" afterwards.

Is it really twisting your knickers that bad that they asked for the lights? I've heard United say stupid stuff all the time on the radio including the guy who gave his entire good bye PA over Washington Center frequency. However, you don't see any of us gleefully posting about it on here.

Unless this is some sort of jealous thing you got going on. You know, Secretly wishing you were at Delta. Kinda like the little boy who is always mean to the girl that he has a secret crush on. o_O

What do you think?

Ouch poor guy.

Hardly!

Jeez. No kidding. Who cares. So DAL also asks for a wind check just after tower gave them the winds. Some guys actually lose sleep over this. So he did not hear the winds the first time and would like to know what they are. Who cares??? So another guy wants the lights turned up. So what??? Were you wearing NVGs and the lights shut them down?

Maybe it was General Lee flying?

:)

Nope, I have been off the last week, which is a virtue of international trips that I fly, which are quite productive and consolidate the flying into one portion of the month if I want to do that. I'll be in in Rio next week, have dinner in Rome the week after that (with an ice cream sundae on the flight over of course) and a long layover in San Francisco to throw in some domestic at the end of the month. That's the beauty of being able to this type of flying--it's called VARIETY--something some know they would "luv" to have but can't admit it!!!

Maybe I'll bid narrowbody captain on an upcoming bid if I want to. Or, up to the ultra-long haul routes to try that. Just glad I'm not stuck going to Lubbock, Amarillo, and EL PASO! Thanksgiving at the Motel 6? No thanks!!!

Bye Bye --- General Lee :)

So what??? Where you wearing NVGs and the lights shut them down?

No kidding. Since this is a usual troll thread, we can redirect it towards something actually useful. Pilots, turning on PCL at full intensity just for fun really screws up night vision goggles. And every time I hear an airline pilots complain that landing lights," destroyed their night vision," it kills a dozen kittens. Yes, your night vision will be terrible as you blast off IFR up to flight level one gazillion.

With the dome light on... for the entire flight...
