Non-sequitur from “UA 787 Emergency”

I think someone was selling how sweet reserve was during COVID so people got hired expecting that they’d make a six figure paycheck by not actually having to go to work, EXCEPT for premium pay.

There’s a department-wide full court press on to reduce “credit” so if you’re on reserve, prepare to stay busy.

It's all a matter of perspective. Your future seniority list friends have been saying the same thing about the Eskimo.

I call in sick when I am sick, I call in sick when I am unfit to fly. The company handles it improperly IMHO because I get a CP call every single time but I can justify it so I am not even worried about it.

Interesting you mention this. Im in a bit of a chat group with a bunch of former naval aviators on the AS and HAL sides. The HAL dudes were asking specifically about this today. Someone must have brought it up recently over there. My take is that the old AS guys have a lot of stories. Stories that I'm sure were true, about CP's of yesteryear. Those stories haven't been my experience.
What's up with you navy guys and group texts? Every FO i fly with that's former navy brings up a group text at least once. It's like the primary source of information and everything else exists to back it up? Some good rumor mill chat to make a 4 hour flight go by i have to admit.

My favorite was “I had an hour left in my short call period and they called me for a trip” that went into my “X” days, is this legal?”

(Legal as hell, Bruv)

X days are days that they’ll try NOT to schedule you into, but if they do, you get those days off back during the month).

Or when I was talking to a buddy in the office in SEA: “Scheduling called to assign a trip a RSV pilot they said they were out on the ski slopes and said he wasn’t coming in and how they needed to call someone else”
I can't tell you how many times at my previous AAirline guys sitting Long Call (12 hrs) were complaining about people calling in sick more than 12 hours prior to departure because they then had to get into base to go fly and the Short Call guys (promptly) were complaining that people were calling in sick at any time and that they HAD to go fly.

"Bro, I bid short call so that I don't have to fly!"

Um...dude...that's exactly what you're there for.

Ungh.

Yeah, we had something relatively similar a few days ago. “If you call in with less than X hours, then someone gets a green slip and a short call gets to live for another day!”

You’re all millionaire bus drivers. Call in sick when you know you are unable to be well by check-in.

I think probably because in the last 5-10 years, such chats have become common in squadron life. Would hardly say primary source of information, other than you know, the official chats where we disseminate actual information. But the others are like you say, great rumor/gossip mills. Maybe it is like my generation's answer to more modern social media like Insta or tiktok or twitter that the kids use.

Gotta have some way of helping coach all your squadron buddies into getting hired into the training department, even if they Didn’t Earn It.

I’m in a WhatsApp group or two and it’s 90% static.

I don’t have any of my devices set up for notitfications so if anyone directly writes a question to me, it might be weeks.

It’s like the last thing I need is… more notifications when I wake up to easily 100+ texts/morning.

You need a 2nd device for the truly important people.... ;-)

Right. I had to explain to someone that just because Spirit wouldn’t normally schedule a reserve pilot into a movable day off — that contract has a high advance notice requirement for that as opposed to the “ha ha!” rules here — the assignment was in compliance, they’d get their day back and no it doesn’t pay above guarantee. Because that’s what’s in the contract. (I was surprised the bright sparks in Scheduling 1) remembered that provision and 2) applied it correctly, since they usually did neither.)

Sounds like an individual BCP issue...

I've got nothing to do with the training department, and I can't say any of my friends do either. Buuuuuutttttttt......for the sake of discussion, how might one "earn" a job in the training department, in this entirely meritless business? And who would have "earned" such a position?

Well, by being a good instructor, not by whose squadron buddy you are, which to my observation is sorely lacking in the McChord Mafia

So I agree with your criteria, but how does a line pilot get recognized as being a "good instructor"?

Some kind of system where the FOs nominate line captains who care about learning would be cool but I think that would be abused by various mafias. You make a very valid point that it's super difficult to screen for "caring about learning". As evidenced by our training department.
