New "controller" at KJFK Tower...

.whether fair or unfair, the court of public opinion has spoken and this incident has been mostly criticized and ridiculed from all corners and.

The funny thing is that for the most part "public opinion" is firmly on the side of the controller and against the FAA.

Hey now.........that could happen, you know.

We need to protect "the children!" ;)

OMGOMG what if... when he rolled inverted and did a lomcevak... he was over a SCHOOL?

DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!111111oneoneone

I agree. This statement I believe, sums it up well

Public opinion is generally misinformed...

Yes, most certainly the public opinion is one of ignorance and misinformation. It is nevertheless a driving force in this society. Doug Church's statement in this case is one of a person that is now in a very awkward position. He may very well personally believe that this incident is not a big deal. After all, the fact that controllers have been letting kids make supervised calls to an aircraft isn't exactly super secret decoder ring material. But now that it's hit the 'court of public opinion' and it's turned into a brush fire, it leaves him very little choice but to back the profession and try to repair the damage this has caused in public confidence in air safety. I don't envy his position one little bit. What would the public outcry be if NATCA turned around and made the official stance of "This is not a big deal"? Then here we go with the public opinion driving society again. It sucks, it's wrong, and in a perfect world things in an industry should be left to those who are in the industry. I don't tell a doctor how to run his operating room or cut into my chest just because I'm the one on the table. But we just plain live in a society that cares more about who the next American Idol will be, who Britney Spears is doing now, and believe that because it's in print or being shown on TV it MUST be true. Unfortunately, they outnumber us by well over 1000 to 1.

That all being said, the mountain of a mole hill and the media making a circus of it is all just plain BS. I feel fortunate that I was able to take my son up in the Tower earlier last year because I certainly don't see a repeat performance of that any time soon because of this. That controller should NOT lose their job, but I too think that he's going to be a sacrificial lamb for all of this.

All this is true, but that doesn't mean we should cave. Sometimes you've got to stand up for what you believe to be right, even if most everyone else thinks you're wrong.

And, as I believe has been mentioned, the percentage of the public calling for this guy's head isn't even close to what some in the media have made it out to be. Which is all the more reason not to give in to the people who can make a lot of noise.

True. I mentioned this in my letter to Babbitt, too. A couple of the news websites even calculate the percentages for you! A solid two thirds on the ones I saw didn't feel threatened by juvenile clearances.

And we, the people, outnumber our senators and congresspersons by a lot, and look how much control we have over them. If we take that argument of the people deciding the fate of this incident, we are very much undercutting the actual power and responsibility the position currently holds and turn it into nothing more than a flower which sways in the wind of public opinion.

Not a great way to run the show IMHO
