New "controller" at KJFK Tower...

Nope, you could hear the other controllers in the background.

Seriously guys; mountain out of a mole hill.

It stems from that weird subsection of our culture that revels in righteous indignation.

Nothing happened.

Nothing bad COULD have happened.

But OMG, just in case something COULD have happened, OMG OMG OMG there are babies on those airplanes that well, uhh, may have gotten a bad instruction. OMG OMGOMG what if, instead, of clearing an airplane for takeoff under the strict oversight of the controllers, the kid said "Airliner 1119, roll inverted and do a lomcevak!" and and.... if the pilot, unable to think for himself, COMPLIED??

Doooooooooooooooooooooom!

There are thousands of people sitting in front of their 42" LCD displays biting their nails, waiting for the controller to approach the podium and apologize. Then they'll debate back and forth over whether the apology was good enough and decide if any administration action was severe enough.

It's the American Idolization of our culture.

Makes me think of this

Sad, but that is exactly what the media does, which is why I have zero faith in what they say.......Was that Dianne Sawyer and Miles O'brien...:rotfl:

I know, some of these people need to see themselves and ask the same question. Even when there is a plane crash too. All they will do is assume, assume, assume. I remember when we had that learjet crash and I was watching CNN when I heard about it and then Rick Sanchez said something about the cargo shifting in the plane may be the cause. Oh the things they say.

I got something to say to them. Lay off the guy and let the late-night comedians take care of it!!

Would anyone here not be the least bit hesitant to accept a clearance from a child?

Far fetched maybe, but picture some kid on the airport property goofing around with a VHF transceiver.

In any event, it was very dumb of the controller to think this wouldn't cause his career any harm.

Maybe, but I probably wouldn't have known it was a child. I would have just assumed it was a female controller, possibly a trainee. A kid is the last thing I would expect to hear over the frequency, so it wouldn't have even been a consideration.

I got something to say to them. Lay off the guy and let the late-night comedians take care of it!!

Except for Leno.

I can just imagine his safe, rounded-off edges, nasaly-voice trying to deliver a joke he didn't write himself!

I'm with Coco.

I think it's well documented that he's a buffoon.

You know what's sad is that I was watching that live and thought, "Damn, this is going to end up on the Daily Show..." And voila! There it is! :)

http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2010/03/03/roberts.child.control.tower.cnn?iref=allsearch

listen to the phone call from Ken from Louisianna and the student pilot named Taylor...These morons are passengers (KEN) and future pilots (TAYLOR). Where do these people come from, It would appear stupidity really is this rampant in the USA. I really hope taylor isnt going to try to be a professional pilot someday....scary...

I think Ken has an IQ of about 85, which would be just above Forrest Gump. I'm a bit disappointed in Taylor, as someone who should know SOMETHING about aviation, and if he bumbles as much on the radio when he's trying to fly as much as he does when trying to talk on the phone, I'd hate to be on freq at the same time as him.

Seriously people, I cannot believe, even in this country, how blown out of proportion this whole fiasco is.

That is awesome that a controller let a kid do that! definatley had to smile at that. I too hope the controller doesn't get in trouble.

If they fire this controller, how do you think the child will grow up to feel about the federal government? His dad was fired because he brought him to work and he got an opportunity of a life time to tell pilot's what to do!

I find it very disturbing and frustrating what this has turned into. Everyday I wake up with less and less respect for the government and the FAA.

I've hated Rick Sanchez ever since he was on WSVN 7 in Miami. You shoulda seen him when the Hurricanes would get near.

Doug Church responded to my question about NATCA's statement on stuckmic

http://www.stuckmic.com/ask-natca/10371-kid-jfk-tower.html

Doug Churchs response is pure BS, if i didnt know better i would have thought that it was the FFA talking.this is nothing more that screwing a member in public just so they look good due to the FFA reform bill comming up.how many drug additcs drunks and thiefs over the years this union has defended and thay want to crap on this member over this.iam about 2 seconds from throwing my charter member pin in the toilet.

oh and Doug if NATCA is conserned with saftey then why did it let the FFA use URET as a strip replacement, funny how NATCA is so quiet about the 6 ZDC controller involved with the NWA nordo.

OG
P.S. my beef isnt with the NATCA locals but with the National office whos members have been off the boards too long.

Hey now.........that could happen, you know.

We need to protect "the children!" ;)

His reponse is rhetoric. Party line response. Behind closed doors is my belief it is in fact simply bad timing and not a case of unprofessional behavior.

Professional. I had that term. . .like "professional" athletes, it is for me, strictly a term, first and foremost, a term for being paid.

Professional in any occupation/avocation can still do inappropriate things.

Unprofessional? Please.
