New ASA hiring min's

Re: New ASA hiring min\'s

[ QUOTE ]
I wasn't comparing someone with a degree and someone without one. What I'm saying is that as aerospace engineering, you know more than the average pilot about the aircraft and etc. I'm not saying that you shouldn't be a pilot because you don't have a degree and such. Ask any aero engineer here and they probably can explain it better.

[/ QUOTE ]
I spend two years in manufacturing engineering before I switched to something else. Manufacturing engineering focuses on figuring out how to manufacture something that someone else has already designed. It was kind of a strange experience. Most of the other students had never even taken metal shop in high school. I was probably the only one who had ever run a lathe or milling machine in my whole class. We had to take 'shop' in college, so the engineers would be familiar with the machines and their capabilities. During class I heard more than one person say "this sucks, why do we have to know this?". I think many of the engineering students did not really have any mechanical aptitude or even interest, they were just good at math and science and were told that they could make money if they went into engineering.

I would guess that if you go into aeronautical engineering, you would be one of only a few pilot's in your class. Many of the rest will be clueless pin heads.

So, I'm with ESF on this one. Aeronautical Engineering is a worthy degree and I would encourage you to pursue it. It is a nice fall back to have and could be valuable later in your flying career. Especially if you want to become a test pilot. Just don't think it will make you Sky King. If all you want is beter system's knowledge, you would probably be better off becoming an A&P. Their skills are always in demand, and not just in aviation. If you ever want to own your own aircraft it will also make this a little more affordable.

Hmmmm I might seriously beg to differ! My original college major was Aeronautical Engineering. You know before I found out that I majorly sucked in math.
I also thought having an AE degree would make me a better pilot.
The college advisor to the AE department strongly advised me to go another route.
Here are his words:

"Do you want to have a job when you graduate college"

"Yes"

"Well then I would suggest another field in engineering. Companies just aren't hiring AE's like they used to.
The street is littered with AE all vying for the same job for that one company that might be hiring AE's."

"The smarter choice is Mechanical,Electrical or Computer/Software Science engineering. Those are the in demand jobs in engineering in todays world."

"Also I might add to that list Civil engineering. There is always a new building going up somewhere or a new highway or something being built.
It might not pay as much as the other jobs I suggested but you'll never be without work!"

That was three years ago and I think the same holds true today.

Re: New ASA hiring min\'s

So, for future reference, what's the gouge on the ASA interview? Is it just the sit down and chat type with several people a la XJT or is there a sim ride involved as well?

WAY back in the day when I was still considereing going to ATA (yeah, THAT long ago), ASA was my target airline. Then the industry slowed down, 9/11 hit, ASA more or less stopped hiring, the school went under, and I expanded my horizons and became aware of several other regionals. I still REALLY wouldn't mind flying for ASA, and the commute to ATL wouldn't be to bad from MEM or MCO.

Attention Pilots!

NEW ASA PILOT HIRING MINIMUMS

What are the minimums for hiring?

600 Total Time

100 Multi-Engine Time

100 Hours In Past 6 Months

Competitive Candidates will be contacted upon resume review

What is competitive?

A pilot with the background that would enable them to complete CRJ training in 8 sim sessions. Currently we are looking at people with 121 experience. Candidates with other than 121 experience will be considered if they possess advanced aircraft training/experience.

Yup..... I knew it sounded too good to be true.

From now on, when we go to post "minimums", let's post the whole story, shall we?

Sounds to me like that would only be people who graduated from schools like Pan-Am, MAPD,ATP or FSA.
As all of those schools have a CRJ/ERJ glass cockpit training sim and establish relationships with ASA and other regional airlines.

No people...this doesn't mean just special programs. By advanced training/aircraft it could mean lots of things. They are looking for things like high performance twins, single-engine t-props, etc...

Re: ASA pilot letter

That's right up DCA, FSA, and ATP's alley. Theie grads have sim time and have some sort of bridge program experience.

Doesn't sound too good to be true to me. What's with all the negativity?

Because of the post here I know of 2 guys who already have sent resumes and gotten call backs from ASA.

Re: ASA pilot letter

$64K Question:

How long will the new minimums be in place? Will the glut (?) of resumes yield enough pilots to satisfy the demand?

I think I'll have the 100 hours by the end of the summer...

I doubt there will be a glut. The rumor today around the water cooler was that the net gain was only 4 pilots last month hired... Since they're trying to maintain an average of 25 per month for the whole year, and the first quarter was an average of 0...you do the math.

Plus, Skip just announced that we are delaying 5 deliveries until 2006, with an additional 6 planes in 2006, so the hiring will be continuing on into the new year.

Overall, hiring looks good for those of us who want to work for ASA. Keep in mind that could all change if ASA gets sold off.

Re: ASA pilot letter

Okay, ASA and Expressjet both have gone to 600/100. Do y'all think that anyone else will follow?

That is most definitely cool, but my post was not negative. Just realistic. The tone you read into it was just that - tone YOU read into it.

But now it's time for you to give the rest of the real story regardng your two acquaintences:
What where their times?
Did they have prior Part 121 experience?
How much glas cockpit experience/advance systems experience did they have?
Where did they do their training?

FWIW: Because of this thread, I, too sent my resume in and got nadda. Nothing. Nil. And I'm 200 hours OVER the minimum TT, with TWO college degrees, a ton of "life experience".....JUST under the min multi time by about 10 hours though, so.....

Get that extra 10 and send the resume in again. I've heard from another board they're swamped and taking a while for call backs. It never hurts to try.
