New ASA hiring min's

Re: New ASA hiring min\'s

I agree with MikeD, why not lower the mins and pay us nothing? When it becomes the norm to hire guys at 600, 700, 800hrs the airline is being "generous" and any new guy will be happy to accept any pitance of a salary thrown at him.

Also from the outside looking in why pay a guy who has only 600hrs of experience a respectable salary?

Great Lakes is hiring for the IGM base. You and I could fly together.

I dunno Mike, the G limit on the 1900 would probably be too restrictive for you. That and there isn't much that you can blow up/shoot from the 1900 either.

Yeah, you're right.

But downtown Kingman nightlife would rock for us on the weekends! Especially since we'd be the only airline pilots in town!

That said, given the chance (and hopefully I will get it

) I think between the faster upgrade and the realative coolness of the plane, I would probably go for the ATR over the RJ. The way I look at it, I will have the *rest* of my career to fly planes with jet engines on them. When else am I going to get an option at a 66 seat (I think) turbo prop? Well, all that as long as I'm not having to deal with too much icing in it. Sorry, this paragraph was sounding sort of a.net-ish.

If thats your goal, then I would recommend Colgan or Great mistakes, I mean lakes. At both places you'll probably upgrade in about a year or less.

I would guess lots, or as many as they need to fill slots. I'm not sure they would go this route, but you could also pay pilots less with those lower times.

[/ QUOTE ]

....and the downward spiral will continue. Why not just hire with 100/20 and pay them nothing?

[/ QUOTE ]

Ease up now. I wasn't saying I thought they should, I was suggesting that could be the next logical step for an airline looking to save costs.

LOL.

I would definitely consider flying for Chautauqua to make a move back to central Ohio. I didn't know until tonight that you could base there.

[/ QUOTE ]

I hope you are kidding.... Ohio is the arm pit of America!

[/ QUOTE ]

I grew up in Central Ohio. Ohio isn't that bad once you have lived in different locals across the US. I would like to live somewhere in the county I grew up in out in the country and commute somewhere. Reasonably cheap living in North-Central Rural Ohio.

Re: New ASA hiring min\'s

weren't the regionals hiring pilots in the sub-500 hour range pre-9/11?? so why should it be so crazy to hear an airline with minimums at 600/100?

The "extra" stuff on the site has been unavailable for months. Look at the aircraft numbers on the site...that hasn't been correct for a LONG time. As far as the mins go I've heard it from people directly involved in recruiting/hiring.

Upgrade times can vary. Right now it seems to be about three years or so but who knows what the future holds. The ATR is the quickest route to PIC time.

How many guys are actually going to be hired with 600/100?

[/ QUOTE ]

Thats my question as well..but there are always the lucky few that do squeak in at these mins or even below! Had a buddy that interned at Xjet and had only 450/250 and got hired. Crazy times!

Re: New ASA hiring min\'s

I heard through a source that they are definately lowering the mins, but only for folks who went through 'special' programs, i.e. Comair Academy, E-Riddle, Flight Safety, etc...

Even if you have the total time but only 199 hours of multi, you are still shy of the minimums and need not apply...

Re: New ASA hiring min\'s

That's a bunch of cr@p. Then people say the airlines don't favor certain schools. But if you go to one of their schools you can get in sooner.
banghead.gif

I won't be going to any of those schools, not due to the fact of geting in or not, but due to the fact that they are over-priced and I can get the same degree at a good school. I'll be doing mechanical and aerospace engineering which IMO, makes a better pilot than the regular aerospace studies.

Re: ASA pilot letter

Hmm... I wonder where they are going to be finding 600 hour pilots with 121 time.

Right-o, Brian.

I don't have a degree, and let me tell you- I am one hell of a bad pilot. It's a miracle that I'm not at the bottom of a smoking hole yet.

Brian, you've ingested too much of the Jetcareers KoolAid. You do not need a degree to be good at flying an airplane, despite what most on here will tell you. A degree makes you a more competitive applicant, but not even that anymore. Obviously, there's not much "competition" if mins are 600/100.

I'll take my hugely unpopular opinion and shut up now.

Re: New ASA hiring min\'s

ESF, it's not *that* unpopular of an opinion. And Brian, good of you to go after aero/mech but don't start looking down on those who don't go that route. I did 3 years of dual aero/mech (I wasn't planning on being a pilot at that point) before I decided I wanted to fly the things instead of build them. There is a common trait (at least in college) among hard science people that they are "better" then all the communications, english and other "soft"majors. It's a bunch of BS. As long as somebody is making an effort to better themselves they are doing the right thing. Sure some of those guys didn't have 4 years of calculus and couldn't talk about the second law of thermodynamics but on the other hand, I bet they never wrote a run on sentence like this one. As far as aviation goes, what do I have because of those three years? Well, sometimes when I look out at a wing and start thinking about the actual physics (not the bernuli/newton stuff) I get really scared that the plane is going to fall out of the sky. Also, I tend to confuse the the heck out of my students sometimes when we get into talking about fluid flow over a laminar surface and compressed gas theory.

And BTW, how do MAPD guys have 121 time?

Ethan
