Of course that's how its supposed to work, Cal. But, those young SKW and XJT aren't cutting your throat, are they? Do you give jumpseat rides to scabs?

And don't give me that "hate speech" crapola. Just because someone has a differing opinion does not qualify their opinion as "hate". Refusing to aid and abet someone who has crossed a picket line and/or is attempting to gut my lifestyle is simply that...a refusal. Its not hatred. Its discernment. Even the old guys in aviation knew you had to draw a line in the sand somewhere.

What do you think about the fact that Virgin (in addition to paying $95 an hour for A320 skippers) is using a "merit" system of promotion rather than a seniority system. Read "Flying the Line" again for a refresher on how the airlines used to operate before ALPA. When the Chief Pilot's son leapfrogged over everybody else for that left seat AND the monthly bid lines.

And you want to help Virgin re-establish that system in the name of "professional courtesy"? You may talk karma all you want, but I will gladly spend a night away from home before I would ever approach a jetBlue, Virgin or Skybus desk and ask for a jumpseat ride. Just remember on the next contract cycle when CAL wants to drop your narrowbody rates to $95 an hour where that figure came from.

UAL, USAir and Delta pilots know where their narrowbody rates came from...jetBlue. Why? Because jetBlue pilots proved beyond a doubt that they would (5 years ago when Major airline narrowbody rates were over $200 an hour) work for $129 an hour. They lowered the bar. The ATA and Ford & Harrison are dedicated to bringing YOUR pay in line with that.

And if you don't think the ATA and F&H are watching to see if Virgin and Skybus are going to make it, you're dreaming. If those airlines are successful, even in the short run, the bar will be lowered again. And everyone who has helped those guys get to work can thank the man in the mirror for his pay cut.

And, once again, while you're worried about who gets into your jumpseat management has walked away with salary, benefits and penisons all totaling billions of dollars.

It's like the midget calling you names on the street while the 6', 350lb, one-armed man stands behind you stealing your wallet and making out with your girlfriend/wife.

Listen, when your fighting the bankruptcy court, there's very little an individual can do about it. But why did the airlines choose the pay and benefit levels to impose? Because they saw jetBlue's success largely due to the pay and benefits jetBlue paid (in addition to the intial sweetheart lease deals).

As one Captain, I have very little control over the macro issues you present. The one thing I can control is who gets access to my jumpseat. And if that makes it more difficult for one guy on one day to cut my throat, then that's my little contribution (hopefully!) to the demise of those carriers who are ruining the piloting profession.

"(5 years ago when Major airline narrowbody rates were over $200 an hour)"

Are you saying if there was no Jetblue, UAL 737 Capts today would be making $200/hr?

Re: How jumpseating is supposed to work

Velocipede, do you ever see anything good in life or is it all crap from your point of view?

Re: How jumpseating is supposed to work

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Dude cry me a fricken river, its the same crap that you write over and over and over, go do something productive with your feelings about this.

So not allowing someone a ride home to see their kids is going to give the industry a 180 and back to the '90s pay scale pilots knew and loved?

Mind letting me know what company you work for so I never have to fly with you?

Thanks for sharing the story, Cal. Glad everything worked out.

Re: How jumpseating is supposed to work

And Eagle guys are more than welcome to ride with me. However, since you've never met me, you shouldn't jump to any conclusions about my attitude on other topics.

However, on this subject, we'd better all draw a line in the sand or the race to the bottom will continue.

Re: How jumpseating is supposed to work

I'm still trying to figure how this guy thinks that JetBlue is the end of the world, but Skywest and Express Jet flying Houston to Toronto (which used to be a mainline route) is peachy. Heck I rode Detroit to Salt Lake on a Shuttle America RJ once and was about ready to gouge my eyes out if only because that should have been a 737 doing it, not an EMB-170.

I mean, I just don't get this guy. I mean if he's gonna hate, then hate everybody!

Re: How jumpseating is supposed to work

Are you saying you wouldn't give an RJ guy a jumpseat?

Can any of you guys read for comprehension? Regional guys are welcome. They don't undercut my contract.

As for me there are only 5 automatic rejects:

1. Scabs
2. jetBlue
3. Skybus
4. Virgin America
5. Gojets

That's it. Got it now?

Re: How jumpseating is supposed to work

Man, I complain a lot. I guess some would call me a cynic, but DAMN!!!! I look like Mr. Positive compared to this guy. Do me a favor don't pull down the rest of the world when you find yourself at the bottom of the hole you jumped into.

WHAT!!!! I don't know who you work for or why they hired you but if you think regionals are not pulling down the pay for every one your <euphemism for crazy>.

I don't think he's fond of ExpressJet:

He's especially not fond of those RJ's operating on subsidized EAS routes. :p

You could have struck.

But you didn't. You (and your fellow pilots) decided to keep showing up to work and thereore "accept" the crap sandwhich that was handed to you. In some cases, these cuts were voted in by the very people they screwed - and in doing so these pilots said that a job, of any kind, is/was better than losing it outright (risk of striking).

This whole "little me" cop-out is exactly that, a cop-out.

You're willing to screw anyone you think is hurting your lifestyle EXCEPT the very people who ACTUALLY did the hurting. Interesting ethos.

And, before you pull out this card, I realize everything isn't black and white. It's hard to walk out with the risk of losing the job completely. But, who said anything in life - or worthwhile - was easy? Who ever said this life was fair? A guy can't really go round blaming other people - not directly related to his circumstance - for his failure to take action.

Here's what I don't understand. Calcapt posts up a very good thread about a great jumpseat story, and how pilots take care of each other. Never once was Jetblue or scabs mentioned. Then YOU chime in here with this absurd arguement. Way to destroy a perfectly good story. Based on your attitude, I think I'd leave you at the gate.

Calcapt, thanks for the story. :)

Re: How jumpseating is supposed to work

:yeahthat: in fact, i think i'll be modifying this thread and taking all of the crap talk out because it's intended to be a good, UPLIFTING, positive, moral, learning type of thread. We need more threads like this, not the other crap...

Talk about negative nancy....got a problem, do something about it or stop complaining.
