I am not trying to be a d-bag about your pics but does anyone else think that those photo's look a little photoshopped? Maybe I am just losing it.

The photos are not photoshoped , but a crappy camera was used to take these photos , plus its really hard to get good shots with all the vibrations going on .
cameras /taking pics are strictly prohibited on board any govt/military aircraft in algeria :pirate:

Not really....most pics I have tried to take through a canopy (both in the Hornet and T-45C) end up a little distorted like that...looks legit to me. Great photos by the way, I bet that was a fun hop!

A refueling probe? The forces for the Algerian AF shows no tankers. No IL-76. ???

So you are obviously in one of the six -29UBs?

Interesting too in that there was a press release earlier this year with the Russians buying back 24 MiG-29s that Algeria refused to accept due to 'inferior quality'.

The periscope for the -29UB?
5054_1117916199513_1575256686_288579_897682_n.jpg

Kilometers/hr? And altitude in meters. Tough translation, huh?

How did you like the god's eye view attitude indicator?

So, how does one wind up in the back of a -29UB in Algeria. this has got to be an interesting story.

3-ONLY 15 OF THE MIGS WERE RETURNED BACK BECAUSE THEY WERE USED AIRCRAFT AND NOT BRAND NEW CONTRARY TO THE CONTRACT TERMS .

4-So you are obviously in one of the six -29UBs?
WHAT DO YOU THINK?

5-The periscope for the -29UB?
NEGATIVE
I ALSO WAS ONBOARD ANOTHER AIRCRAFT OTHER THAN THE SMT
6- Kilometers/hr? And altitude in meters. Tough translation, huh?
METRIC SYSTEM , YA DIG?
TRANSLATION IS VERY EASY IF YOU KNOW HOW TO CONVERT YOUR LOCAL TIME TO MILITARY TIME :D

Do they refer to them as -76s or -78s per western designations?

Western avionics? Universal.. a retrofit.

3-ONLY 15 OF THE MIGS WERE RETURNED BACK BECAUSE THEY WERE USED AIRCRAFT AND NOT BRAND NEW CONTRARY TO THE CONTRACT TERMS .
Good to know the real story.

4-So you are obviously in one of the six -29UBs?

I asked. It's unlikely you would be trying to chase a -29 in an L-39. And the order of battle shows Algeria with 8 -29UBs.

6- Kilometers/hr? And altitude in meters. Tough translation, huh?

I was not used to meter/sec for climb/descent and yes, initially seeing 500km/hr seemed like a fast speed until you realize you're just loafing along at less than 300kts.

I agree. It is a good system but it takes a bit of time for western pilots to adjust to what they are seeing from 'inside out' to 'outside in'.

Looks like the front seat. And since this forum is not exactly an extension of the CIA and it only takes a bit of knowledge to notice things, if you thought you had cover, at 1700 this afternoon (5PM for non- military) (GMT+1 for hard core military :D) you can study up on this video.

Two more questions before you ...uh.. go back 'undercover'. Do these have the variable position (thrust vectoring) nozzles. When I was at a MiG press conference they admitted the life of the nozzles was relatively short due to hotspots when in burner (or do you call it 'reheat'?). Have they resolved that? Are the Algerians satisfied with their Flankers? India seemed to have done quite well with their -30MKIs at recent events. (actually that was four questions.. sorry)

I'm puzzled.

Some of these photos looked familiar to me, and on further examination, I see that some were posted on the Algerian forum last Autumn.

eg:

http://forcesdz.forumactif.com/arme-de-l-air-f2/mig-29s-ub-smt-ubt-t2562-30.htm

and that they originally appeared on the Russian 'Strizhi' forum before that.

They certainly weren't taken within the past few days or weeks, so when exactly did you take them?

And - much as I'd like to believe that Algeria only returned some of its MiG-29SMTs and UBTs, and still retains some in service, I don't believe this to be the case.

You say that:
"3-ONLY 15 OF THE MIGS WERE RETURNED BACK BECAUSE THEY WERE USED AIRCRAFT AND NOT BRAND NEW CONTRARY TO THE CONTRACT TERMS."

http://www.mars.slupsk.pl/fort/mig/mig-29-dz.htm

suggests that only 15 (and perhaps only seven SMTs and one UBT) were actually delivered, while

http://mdb.cast.ru/mdb/1-2008/item3/article1/

says that only 15 were delivered, and that all were returned to the USSR from February 2008.

It may be coincidence, but a user 'Algeria 1' posted an old picture of a Bulgarian MiG-29 on the Algerian forum claiming that it was "algerianr*we tack this pic just 6day ago...."

First post, nice to meet you!

Thank you, it's very nice to meet you too!

I'm not trying to cause trouble, but obviously if the Algerians have kept some of the SMTs, it's dynamite, and as a journo working in the field of North African/Arabian Aerospace, I'm keen to learn (and report) the truth.
